Tuesday August 7, 2012CollegeSwimming.com Scores the Olympics, Gators Top the Rankings

Gainesville, Fla.

During the 2012 Olympics, 91 of all the semifinalistsí swims were from current or former college student-athletes. CollegeSwimming.com has scored the Olympic swimming events as if they were the NCAA Championship and then ranked each school based on their scores. The University of Florida ranked first in both the menís and the womenís categories.

In the rankings, the Gator men would have finished with 91 points edging out fellow Southeastern Conference team Auburn who would have had 82 points. The men included former Gator great Ryan Lochte, who finished the Olympics with three individual medals and made the finals in all six of his events. There were seven other current and former Gators that advanced to semifinals and four moved on the finals of their respective events.

For the women, Florida topped all points as they would have scored a total of 112 points putting them ahead of California who would finish second with 100 points. Current Gator Elizabeth Beisel led the women as she medaled in both of her individual events. Six other swimmers advanced to the semifinals and five moved on to the finals of their events.

The Gators brought in 11 swimming medals during the London Games. That would tie them for second with Japan in total number of swimming medals. The United States finished first with 30 medals overall and all 11 of Floridaís were part of that total.
