The Florida volleyball team got its 2012 preseason camp underway on Monday evening, as all players reported to campus this weekend and enjoyed their annual team dinner at the home of head coach Mary Wise, with coaches, support staff and parents also in attendance.
The Gators will participate in a number of administrative events on Tuesday, such as receiving their new gear and taking team photos. Two-a-day practices will commence on Wednesday, as most days until the start of school will feature a morning session and an afternoon session.
“This is always my favorite part of every season,” Wise said. “We are beginning two straight weeks with the players and have their undivided attention. What is special with this group is that all 16 players were on campus during the summer training with [strength and conditioning coach] Matt DeLancey. That will pay dividends down the road for our team.”
Florida, which in 2011 extended the nation’s longest streak of consecutive 25-win seasons to 21, return four regular starters from a year ago, including All-SEC selections Taylor Unroe (Muncie, Ind.) and Tangerine Wiggs (Seattle, Wash.), as well as middles Chloe Mann (Gainesville, Fla.) and Betsy Smith (Atlanta, Ga.). The Gators will be seeking their 20th SEC Championship in program history and their 22nd consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. Florida has advanced to the NCAA Round of 16 in 20 of the last 21 years.
Florida begins the 2012 campaign Aug. 24-25, when they host the Campus USA Credit Union Invitational, featuring a Sunshine State lineup of the Gators, Florida Gulf Coast, Florida A&M and Florida International. The Gators were picked to finish third in the Southeastern Conference this season.
