In the first of two finals, former Gator Clark Burckle (U.S.A.) finished sixth in the menís 200m breaststroke. Burckle swam a 2:09.25. Jemma Lowe (Great Britain) then swam in the womenís 200m butterfly final. Lowe finished sixth in a time of 2:06.78.

 

Semifinal action saw Ryan Lochte (U.S.A.) and Omar Pinzon (Colombia) in the menís 200m backstroke. Lochte finished first in his heat with a time of 1:55.40. He advanced to the final as the second place qualifier. The final will take place August 2 at 2:48 p.m. ET. Pinzon was in the second semifinal heat and finished eighth in a time of 1:58.99. He did not advance to the final.

 

Lochte wasnít done though. He was back in the pool shortly after the 200 back for the 200 IM semifinals. He finished first in his semifinal heat with a time of 1:56.13 to advance to the final tomorrow at 3:19 p.m. ET. He will have about 30 minutes between his two final events tomorrow evening. The 200 IM will feature another showdown between Lochte and Michael Phelps.

 

The final event of the evening was the womenís 4x200m freestyle relay. The United States was anchored by former Gator Dana Vollmer (U.S.A.) in the prelims, and she moved to the second leg for the final. The group finished in an Olympic Record time of 7:42.92 to earn gold. Vollmer won her second gold of the 2012 Olympics.

Preliminary Heats:

Ten Gator letterwinners swam in the Day 5 preliminaries Wednesday morning.

 

Ryan Lochte (U.S.A) swam in two events today during the morning prelims. First up for him was the 200m backstroke. He finished first in his heat in a time of 1:56.36 to advance to the semifinals later at 2:47 p.m. ET. His second event was the 200m IM, where he was one of six Gators to compete. Lochte finished first in his heat in a time of 1:58.03 to advance to the semifinals also this afternoon at 3:36 p.m.

 

Two other former Gators Omar Pinzon (Colombia) and Marco Loughran (Great Britain) competed the200m backstroke prelims. Pinzon finished 5th in his heat with a time of 1:58.20, he also advanced to the semifinals of that event. Loughran did not advance to the semifinals.

 

Current Gators Hilda Luthersdottir (Iceland) and Sarra Lajnef (Tunisia) competed in the womenís 200m breaststroke Wednesday morning. Both swam in heat two, with Luthersdottir finishing third in a time of 2:29.60 and Lajnef took fifth in the heat with a 2:31.15. They did not advance to the semifinals.

 

Bradley Ally (Barbados), Marcin Cieslak (Poland), Darian Townsend (South Africa) also competed in the 200m IM during Day 5 prelims. Ally finished third in heat two with a time of 2:00.85. Cieslak and Townsend were both in heat three, finishing sixth and seventh respectively. Cieslak finished in 2:00.45 and Townsend 2:00.57, neither advanced to the semifinal.

 

Dana Vollmer (U.S.A) swam the anchor leg of the womenís 4x200 freestyle relay that finished first in their heat and advanced to the final later today with a time of 7:50.75. Melani Costa-Schmid (Spain) also swam the 4x200 freestyle relay for her country of Spain. Costa-Schmid led off the relay that finished sixth in their heat with a time of 7:54.59, they did not advance to the final.
