Tuesday July 31, 2012Lochte and Dwyer Win Gold in London, Lowe Advances to Final

Gainesville, Fla.

The day was highlighted by the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay as Gators Ryan Lochte (U.S.A) and Conor Dwyer (U.S.A) earned gold with the United States relay team. The U.S.A blistered the field and finished in a time of 6:59.70, three seconds ahead of second place France.

 

Lochte led off the relay with a 1:45.15 split and Dwyer’s second leg of 1:45.23 gave the Americans a huge lead that the rest of the field was unable to overcome. This gave Lochte three medals so far in the London Games (two gold and one silver) and Dwyer earned his first Olympic gold medal.

 

The South African 4x200 free relay team also consisted of two Gators. Darian Townsend (South Africa) led off and current student-athlete Sebastian Rousseau (South African) swam the second leg of the relay. They finished seventh overall in a time of 7:09.65.

 

Former Gator Jemma Lowe (Great Britain) advanced to the 200m butterfly final tomorrow at 3:09 p.m. ET. Lowe finished fifth in her semifinal heat in a time of 2:07.37.

 

Clark Burckle (U.S.A.) continued the success as he finished second in his 200m breaststroke semifinal heat. Burckle’s time of 2:09.11 made him the sixth place qualifier for the final at 2:30 p.m. ET on Wednesday.

 

Brett Fraser (Cayman Islands) and Shaune Fraser (Cayman Islands) each competed in the men’s 100m freestyle semifinal on Tuesday. Brett finished seventh in the first heat with a time of 48.92 and Shaune finished eighth in the heat with a time of 49.07. They did not advance to the final tomorrow.

 

Morning Prelims Recap

Four Gators advance to the semifinals and three to the final of the respective events after solid swims in Tuesday’s preliminary action.

 

Starting off the action on Day 4 were former Gators Brett Fraser (Cayman Islands) and Shaune Fraser (Cayman Islands). The Fraser brothers competed in the men’s 100m freestyle prelims. Brett finished third in heat six with a time of 48.54. He advanced to the semifinals as the sixth place qualifier. Shaune swam in heat eight, finishing sixth in a time of 48.99. He also advanced to the semifinals as the 16th place qualifier. The semifinal will take place later today at 2:30 p.m. ET.

 

The home crowd cheered on Jemma Lowe (Great Britain) as she continued the morning success of former Gators finishing second in her 200m butterfly heat with a time of 2:07.64. Lowe advanced to semifinal at 2:55 p.m. ET as the third place qualifier.

 

Clark Burckle (U.S.A) advanced to the 200m breaststroke semifinal as the sixth place qualifier. Burckle finished second in his heat with a personal best time of 2:09.55. The semifinals will take place at 3:17 p.m. ET.

 

In the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay three Gators, including current swimmer Sebastian Rousseau (South Africa) competed. Rousseau and former Gator Darian Townsend (South Africa) swam for South Africa. Townsend was the lead-off swimmer and Rousseau swam the third leg. The South Africans finished third in their heat in a time of 7:11.51.

 

Conor Dwyer (U.S.A) also appeared in the 4x200m freestyle relay, swimming for team U.S.A. as the anchor leg. Dwyer held onto a large lead and gave the Americans a first place finish in their heat. Dwyer swam aThe team easily advanced to the final tonight as the top team with a time of 7:06.75, nearly three seconds ahead of second place France. Fellow Gator Ryan Lochte (U.S.A) is slated to compete in the 4x200m freestyle relay final.
