Monday July 30, 2012Lochte and Spofforth Compete in Finals on Day 3

Gainesville, Fla.

Two Gator swimmers competed in the finals Monday at the London Games. Ryan Lochte and Gemma Spofforth competed in the menís 200m freestyle and womenís 100m backstroke respectively.

 

Ryan Lochte, who has already collected two medals already in London, was looking for a third in three events as he competed in the menís 200m freestyle final Monday. Lochte finished just off the medal stand as he took fourth in the event. He clocked in with a time of 1:45.04.

 

The other final for the Gators was the womenís 100m backstroke. Gemma Spofforth competed of the host country of Great Britain and is the current world record holder. Spofforth finished fifth in the event with a time of 59.20.

 

In semifinal action, Melani Costa-Schmid (Spain) swam in the 200m freestyle.† She finished fifth in her heat with a time of 1:57.76. She did not advance to the final tomorrow.

Prelims

Several Gators return to the pool on Monday morning for competition held at the Aquatics Centre in the Olympic Park.

 

Former Gator Melani Costa-Schmid (Spain) participated in the 200m freestyle Monday morning. She finished second in her heat with a time of 1:57.79 to advance to the semifinals as the fourth place qualifier. She will return to the pool at 2:30 p.m. for the semifinal heats.

 

Two Gators competed in the 200m butterfly heats. Marcin Cieslak (Poland) finished sixth in his heat in a time of 1:57.07. He finished 17th overall, just missing qualifying for the semifinals. Omar Pinzon (Colombia) also swam in the 200m butterfly. He finished second in the first heat with a time of 2:02.32 but did not advance to the semifinals.

 

Ryan Lochte and Gemma Spofforth already advance to the finals of individual events because of their respective swims on Sunday.

 

Lotchte will be in the pool for the 200m freestyle after he finished second in his semifinals heat and advanced to the finals as the fifth place qualifier. The final will take place Monday, July 30 at 2:42 p.m. ET

 

Spofforth improved on her time from the heats in the 100m backstroke clocking in at 59.70 to finish third in her heat. Spofforth advances to the final as the sixth place qualifier. The final will take place Monday, July 30 at 2:49 p.m. ET.
