Sunday July 29, 2012Gators Gear Up for 2012 Season, 24th Annual Mountain Dew Invitational
The Gators are just a month away from kicking off of the 2012 cross country season and Florida has announced the date, time and schedule of events for the 24th Annual Mountain Dew Invitational, slated for September 15, 2012, at UF’s Mark Bostick Golf Course.
Under the direction and leadership of Florida’s new assistant track and cross country coach Paul Spangler, the Gators are looking to build on the past as they look towards the future.
On the men’s side, the Gators return four USTFCCCA All-South Region honorees and SEC Freshman of the Year Jimmy Clark (St. Johns, Fla.) as the squad aims to make it two-consecutive years with a NCAA automatic qualifying bid. The 2011 team finished second at the SEC Championship meet for the team’s 15th-straight top-five league finish, marking its highest finish since 2007. The Gators then went on to record a second-place finish at the 2011 NCAA South Regional, sending them to the NCAA Championship meet as a team for the first time since 2006.
On the women’s side, four of the Gators’ five USTFCCCA All-South Region honorees return for the 2012 campaign as 2011-12 senior Genevieve LaCaze (Daisy Hill, Australia) bid farewell to Florida as a senior last season. After winning back-to-back SEC Championships in 2009 and 2010, Florida checked in third at the 2012 league meet, while also taking third at the NCAA South Region Championship, sending three Gators to the NCAA Championship meet with individual at-large bids.
For just the second time since 2006 and the second-consecutive year, the Gators will open the fall slate on the road at the Western Carolina Invitational Friday, August 31, before returning home to the Mark Bostick Golf Course for the 24th Annual Mountain Dew Invitational Sept. 15. Florida will also compete at the Seminole Invitational in Tallahassee (10/5) and Pre-Nationals in Louisville, Ky. (10/13) before the postseason begins with SECs in Nashville (10/26), followed by both Regionals and the NCAA Championships in November.
All high school and college entries for UF’s Mountain Dew Invitational must be submitted through Direct Athletics. Unattached athletes for college races must email entries to Spangler at email@example.com. ENTRY DEADLINE IS MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 10th, 2012, AT 5:00PM.
