Sunday July 29, 2012Three Gators Earn Spots on U.S. Women's Senior National Team
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Two current Gator players, Brittany Dashiell (Bel Air, Md.) and Mikey Meagher (Liverpool, N.Y.) along with current assistant coach Caitlyn McFadden, have been selected to the 36-player roster for the 2012-14 U.S. Women’s Senior National Team, announced Sunday.
Dashiell and McFadden were selected as midfielders while Meagher was named one of five goalies. The three were selected among 84 players representing 34 institutions around the country after participating in the three-day try out on the campus of UMBC in Catonsville, Md.
The team of 36 will serve as the training team pool that will defend Team USA’s 2009 gold medal at the 2013 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Cup in Oshawa, Ontario.
Dashiell is a 2012 All-American and was a Tewaarton Award and Honda Sports Award finalist for the Gators. She started all but one contest last season and was named First-Team All-ALC. Dashiell was in the top four in nearly every statistical category in 2012, including the team leader with 69 points and 23 assists.
Meagher is the reigning IWLCA, SynapseSports.com, and WomensLax.com Goalie of the Year and consensus First-Team All-American for UF, where she went 16-3 in 19 starts last season. The Liverpool, N.Y. native has 145 saves and allowed 125 goals for a .537 save percentage. She was a Second-Team All-ALC selection and IWLCA All-South Region First-Team honoree.
McFadden is a returning member of Team USA, having helped capture gold in 2009 at the FIL World Cup. She enjoyed a successful career at Maryland from 2006-10, where she helped the Terrapins to an NCAA Championship her senior season while being named the Tewaaraton Award winner, the NCAA Championship Most Outstanding Player as well as the two-time ACC Player of the Year.
As members of the team, Dashiell, Meagher, and McFadden will participate in several training events in the coming months, including the Stars & Stripes weekend in October and Champion Challenge in January 2013.
The final 18-player FIL World Cup roster will be announced in February 2013.
