Thursday July 26, 2012Hedberg goes low in second round of International Ladies' European Amateur
University of Florida freshman women’s golfer, Camilla Hedberg (Sitges, Spain), had a stellar second round at the International Ladies’ European Amateur Championship Thursday in Slovenia. Hedberg, who opened the tournament yesterday with a 1-over 72, bounced back in a huge way with a second round 68 (3-under) to vault herself into a tie for 16th place with two rounds to go.
After not carding her first birdie until the 13th hole in Round 1, Hedberg birdied four of the first six holes she played in Round 2, which put her back in red numbers for the tournament. She finished the day at 3-under and is currently 2-under for the tournament. With her solid second round, Hedberg is only six shots back of the leader, Celine Boutier of France, who is 8-under for the tournament, with still two rounds to play. Tee times have yet to be set for Friday’s third round.
Also in action this week, junior Mia Piccio (Bacolod City, Philippines), who is competing in the Women’s Trans National Golf Association Amateur Championship in Elgin, S.C. The tournament, which is all match play, started with 64 golfers and has been whittled down to 16 after two days of play. Piccio has advanced through both days and is one of the final 16 heading into Friday.
Piccio opened the tournament with a gutsy 19 hole 1-up win over Grace Lennon in the first round and then followed that with a 2-and-1 win over Aurora Kan today. Piccio never trailed Kan in the match and was either 1-up or 2-up from the 11th hole on. With the win, Piccio moves on to the round of 16 where she will face Vanessa Koechli later this afternoon for a spot in the quarterfinals.
