University of Florida soccer great Abby Wambach scored one goal and helped the U.S.A. women’s soccer team earn a 4-2 victory against France in the first game of the 2012 Olympics which was played at Hampden Park in Glasgow, Scotland.

The United States earned three points for the victory and will play Colombia on Sat., July 28 at Noon ET.

There are three groups in women’s Olympic soccer competition, with four teams in each group. The top two teams based on points (a win is three points, a tie/draw is one point) from each group advance to the quarterfinals. The United States is in Group G, along with France, Columbia and DPR Korea, which USA will play on July 31.

The United States fell behind 2-0 lead after the first 14 minutes of play, before the Gator’s all-time leading scorer cut France’s lead to 2-1 after Wambach’s header that came off a corner kick in the 19th minute.

That goal, which was Wambach’s 139th career international goal including her fifth in Olympic competition, seemed to break the ice for the USA, as Alex Morgan event the contest 18 minutes later and the game entered the half square at 2-all.

Carli Lloyd put the USA ahead, 3-2, with her goal in the 56th minute before Morgan netted her second of the game to end the scoring.

Fellow Gator standout Heather Mitts, also a member of Team USA, did not see action in Wednesday’s game.

Mel Booth, who is an alternate with the Canadian Olympic team, was not active for her squad’s 2-1 loss to Japan in Group F action on Wednesday. Booth can be activated 24 hours prior to the start of any game and therefore in London training with the club.

The 2012 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony is set for Friday, July 27, before nine different Gators will compete the following day.
