Friday July 20, 2012Lendl advances to match play at North and South Amateur
University of Florida junior women’s golfer Isabelle Lendl (Goshen, Conn.) shot a 1-under 71 Thursday to advance to the match play rounds of the 110th North and South Women’s Amateur Tournament at Pinehurst Golf Club. Lendl had her best day of the tournament in the third and final round of stroke play to not only make the Top-16 cut, but gave herself plenty of breathing room as she finished stroke play in a tie for ninth place where she is 4-over for the tournament.
Lendl got much better after a first round 76, carding a 73 in the second round for a 149 total after two rounds. She easily made the first cut and then carried that momentum into the third round where she had best outing of the week.
Lendl led off the day with a birdie on the first hole and then followed it up with a second birdie on the fifth hole. Finishing the front nine at 2-under vaulted Lendl into the top ten, where she stayed for the remainder of the day. She did card one more birdie on the par 5, 11th hole, but, unfortunately had a double-bogey on the 18th to drop back to 1-under for the day and 4-over for the tournament.
Staying in the top ten allowed Lendl to capture the nine seed in the match play portion of the tournament that starts Friday morning. The junior will play Alejandra Cangrejo of Colombia starting at 7:38 ET on the famous Pinehurst No. 2 course Friday morning.
Junior Mia Piccio (Bacolad City, Phillippines) was also part of the third round of stroke play in the tournament. After making the Top-60 first cut, Piccio didn’t get any momentum in the third round as she finished 9-over for the day and 15-over for the tournament. Even though she did not make the second cut into match play, Piccio still guaranteed herself a Top-30 finish.
