Thursday July 19, 2012Seven Gators Selected to 2012 Media Days Pre-Season All-SEC Team

Hoover, Ala.

Seven Gators were selected to the 2012 Southeastern Conference Media Days Pre-Season All-SEC team, announced on Thursday by the league office.  As a team, the Gators are picked to finish third in the SEC Eastern Division while receiving one first place vote to win the SEC Championship.

Senior Caleb Sturgis (St. Augustine, Fla.) was named the first-team kicker.  Sturgis has been named to the 2012 Groza Award preseason watch list, which honors the best kicker in the country.  He returns after a stellar 2011 season, where he made 22-of-26 field goals, including a season long 55 yards, which was the third longest in the country. He was also successful on all 31 point after attempts and ranked third in the nation with 22 made field goals. Heading into the 2012 season, he is 96-for-101 on extra points and 46-for-60 on field goals.

Junior Matt Elam (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) is a second-team defense pick at defensive back. He was one of five Gators to start in all 13 games last season and led the team in tackles for loss (11.0), pass breakups (seven), and forced fumbles (two). He also recorded 78 tackles in 2011.

Third-team defense honorees included junior defensive linemen Sharrif Floyd (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Dominique Easley (Staten Island, N.Y.), while senior inside linebacker Jon Bostic (Wellington, Fla.) also earned a spot. Senior offensive lineman Xavier Nixon (Fayetteville, N.C.) was named to the third team offense.

Rounding out the Orange and Blue is third-team specialist selection Andre Debose (Sanford, Fla.) at return specialist.

The Gators were selected to finish third in the SEC Eastern Division behind Georgia and South Carolina and received one vote in the overall SEC Championship poll, where LSU is favored to win.  A record 222 voters helped compile the list in conjunction with SEC Media Days taking place in Hoover, Ala. this week.

UF begins the 2012 season when they host Bowling Green at the Swamp on Sept. 1.
