Gainesville, Fla.

A total of 68 Gators appear on the 2011-12 Southeastern Conference First-Year Academic Honor Roll.

Sixty-eight University of Florida student-athletes were named on Thursday to the 2011-12 Southeastern Conference First-Year Academic Honor Roll by league commissioner Mike Slive. Grades from the 2011-12 academic year are used to determine the 2012 SEC First-Year Academic Honor Roll. The total ranks second only to the 97 placed by South Carolina on the First-Year Academic Honor Roll.

Thursday’s announcement gives Florida a total of 251 student-athletes that were named to a SEC Academic Honor Roll in 2011-12. Florida placed 183 on the SEC Academic Honor Rolls (43 on fall list; 48 winter, 92 on the spring) and 68 on the First-Year Honor Roll.

Two Gator freshmen – swimmer Nicholas Caldwell and soccer ‘s Jennifer Larrick – both turned in 4.0 grade point averages in their first year at UF. Four Gators were honored as the conference freshman of the year for their sport in 2011-12 – Jimmy Clark (SEC cross country), Camilla Hedberg (SEC women’s golf), Kytra Hunter (SEC gymnastics) and Nora Barry (American Lacrosse Conference) – and all four appear on the SEC First-Year Academic Honor Roll.

To be recognized to the SEC First-Year Academic Honor Roll, each student-athlete must 1) have a GPA of 3.00 for either the preceding academic year or have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or above at the nominating institution; 2) be on scholarship, a letterwinner; 3) have completed 24 semester hours of non-remedial credit at the nominating institution; and 4) have been a member of the varsity team for the sport’s entire NCAA Championship segment.
