Tuesday July 10, 2012Gators Place 38 on the 2012 Spring SEC Academic Honor Roll; 17 on First-Year Honor Roll

Gainesville, Fla.

The University of Florida track and field programs were honored by the SEC, as a total of 38 student-athletes were named to the 2012 Spring SEC Academic Honor Roll released by league commissioner Mike Slive this week. The list featured 15 athletes from the menís track and field roster and 23 athletes from the womenís track and field squad.

The 38 track and field honorees are part of 92 student-athletes selected to the SEC Academic Honor Roll from the University of Florida for the Spring 2012 semester.†

The SEC First-Year Academic Honor Roll selected 17 freshmen from the squad. The list featured 10 Gator men and seven Gator women track and field athletes.

The 2011-12 season was a historic year for the Gators. The men won the 2012 NCAA †Indoor and Outdoor Championships, becoming the first team to sweep both NCAA titles since 2003 and one of just six programs to ever win both. The Gators claimed their third-consecutive NCAA Indoor title and the Orange and Blue are only one of three programs to win three in a row.

The NCAA Outdoor Championship was the teamís first and gave the Florida athletics program three NCAA titles for the 2011-12 season (menís indoor track and field, womenís tennis).

The Florida women won their second SEC Indoor Championship in three years and their seventh overall. The 23 track and field honorees were the most for any Florida womenís team this spring.

The 2012 Spring SEC Academic Honor Roll is based on grades from the 2011 Summer, 2011 Fall and 2012 Spring terms.

To be recognized to the SEC Academic Honor Roll, each student-athlete must 1) have a GPA of 3.00 for either the preceding academic year or have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or above at the nominating institution; 2) be on scholarship, a letterwinner or have participated on a varsity team for two years if non-scholarship; 3) have completed 24 semester hours of non-remedial credit at the nominating institution; and 4) have been a member of the varsity team for the sportís entire NCAA Championship segment.
