Thursday July 5, 2012UF's Casey Turgeon Named Second-Team Freshman All-American By Baseball America

Durham, N.C.

Gator second baseman Casey Turgeon (Palm Harbor, Fla.) was named a second-team Freshman All-American by Baseball America on Thursday. In his rookie campaign, he started 65 of Florida’s 67 games and batted .281 with 35 runs, 30 RBI, 27 walks, 11 doubles and 10 stolen bases in 13 attempts. In seven NCAA Tournament outings, Turgeon registered a .357 (10-for-28) clip and he ranked second on the club with a .364 average in 37 non-conference games.

Turgeon becomes the ninth Freshman All-American in head coach Kevin O’Sullivan’s five-year tenure, joining Josh Adams (2008), Preston Tucker (2009), Nolan Fontana (2010), Brian Johnson (2010), Austin Maddox (2010), Hudson Randall (2010), Mike Zunino (2010) and Karsten Whitson (2011).

Turgeon was voted as the Gainesville Regional’s Most Outstanding Player after batting .600 (6-for-10) over UF’s three victories, with five RBI, four runs, two doubles, two walks and a homer. In his NCAA Tourney debut, he went 3-for-4 with an RBI single in the second inning and a three-run homer in the fifth inning to account for the Gators’ four runs against Bethune-Cookman and made a leaping grab for the final out to preserve sophomore Jonathon Crawford’s (Okeechobee, Fla.) no-hitter in the 4-0 triumph. Turgeon doubled and scored in the 6-2 win over Georgia Tech in the winner’s bracket contest and was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs in the Regional final. He also chipped in with a double and a run-scoring single during UF’s seven-run fifth inning en route to the 15-3 victory over the Ramblin; Wreck.

He was also chosen to the 2012 SEC All-Tournament Team after helping the Gators reach the semifinal round in Hoover, Ala. Turgeon tied for the team lead with a .429 (6-for-14) showing during Florida’s four outings, highlighted by two-RBI performances in the triumphs over Auburn (1-for-3 with a two-run double in the sixth) and No. 4 South Carolina (2-for-4 with a two-run single in the fifth). The second baseman also set a team season high with eight assists in playing flawless defense in the first meeting with Vanderbilt.

Turgeon was chosen as the SEC Freshman of the Week on May 7 after helping the Gators to an important road series win over third-ranked Kentucky in Lexington. During the weekend set with the Wildcats, he hit .400 (4-for-10) as the Gators took the first two games by scores of 5-3 and 5-1 and dropped the finale, 2-1. In the series-clinching victory, with the game knotted at a run apiece, the rookie led off the eighth inning with his second triple of the campaign and scored the winning run on a one-out single by classmate Josh Tobias (Greensboro, N.C.). Turgeon matched his career high with three hits (3-for-4) and also added a theft as part of a double steal. In the nationally-televised opener on ESPNU, he was 1-for-2 with a walk and sacrifice bunt.

Florida advanced to the NCAA College World Series for the third-consecutive season and was rated third in the final Baseball America poll with a 47-20 overall mark.
