Former University of Florida All-Americans Shara Proctor and Novlene Williams-Mills are the latest Gators to stamp tickets to the 2012 Olympic Games in London this summer, bringing the total number of former and current Florida track & field athletes competing in London to eight.

Proctor earned her spot on the Great Britain roster in stunning fashion, leaping onto the Olympic team by breaking a 29-year-old British long-jump record with her mark of 6.95m/22-9.75. The previous record (6.93m/22-9, Beverley Kinch) stood since 1983, and Proctor’s jump ties her as the eighth-best performer in the world this year.

Proctor becomes the first Anguillan-born female athlete to participate in the Olympic Games and second Anguillan-born athlete overall (Keith Connor – 1984, bronze medalist in men’s triple jump).

Williams-Mills claimed the women’s 400-meter title at the JAAA/Supreme Ventures National Championships at the National Stadium in Kingston, earning her third Olympic berth in 50.60. She owns a season-best time of 49.78, finishing third at the Prefontaine Classic in early June.

The five-time All-American at Florida reached the semifinals in the women’s 400 meters at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games and 2008 Beijing Olympics. Williams-Mills claimed a silver medal in the 4x400-meter relay at the 2004 Olympic Games and won the bronze in the 400 at the 2007 IAAF World Championships.

Proctor and Williams-Mills join fellow Gators Will Claye (USA – long jump/triple jump), Kerron Clement (USA – 400-meter hurdles), Genevieve LaCaze (AUS – 3,000-meter steeplechase), Tony McQuay (USA – 400 meters), Kemal Mesic (BOS – shot put) and Christian Taylor (USA – triple jump) on 2012 Olympic teams.
