Friday June 29, 2012UF Baseball's Hudson Randall Signs With Detroit Tigers
Right-hander Hudson Randall (Atlanta, Ga.), a member of the 2012 Gator baseball team, signed with the Detroit Tigers on Friday. He had been taken in the seventh round at No. 244 by the Tigers and will forgo his final year of eligibility at the University of Florida. Six of the nine players chosen from head coach Kevin O’Sullivan’s club during June’s Major League Baseball Draft have now inked deals.
Randall earned second-team All-South Region accolades for the second year in a row from the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/ Rawlings after going 9-3 with a 2.59 ERA in 16 starts. Over a team-high 94 innings, the righty totaled 62 strikeouts and permitted just 10 walks. Randall twirled a three-hit shutout to defeat Auburn and notched wins over Georgia Tech in the NCAA Gainesville Regional and NC State in the NCAA Gainesville Super Regional. He surrendered two runs or less in 12 of his 16 outings this year and was 5-1 with a 2.52 ERA in SEC action.
As a sophomore, Randall was chosen as an Honorable Mention All-American by College Baseball Insider and was a quarterfinalist for the Pitcher of the Year Award, earning second-team All-South Region and second-team All-SEC recognition. He turned in an 11-3 record and ranked fifth in the SEC with a 2.17 ERA. Randall tied for the team lead with 19 starts, the most by a Gator pitcher since 2005. The righty had 73 strikeouts and 13 walks in a team-high 124.1 innings and held opponents to a .227 batting average. Over 10 SEC outings, Randall went 6-3 with a 3.00 ERA and tossed complete games against South Carolina and Tennessee. He was 3-0 with a 1.49 ERA in five postseason starts, including 2-0 with a 1.91 ERA in four NCAA Tournament games in which he had 24 strikeouts and issued five walks.
In his freshman year in 2010, Randall was named to the Baseball America, Louisville Slugger, NCBWA and Yahoo! Sports Freshman All-American teams and was a member of the SEC’s All-Freshman squad and the league’s Freshman Academic Honor Roll. He led the Gators with 17 starts and turned in an 8-4 mark with a 3.24 ERA in 20 appearances covering 97.1 innings, finishing second on the club with 69 strikeouts.
Randall completed his Gator tenure with a record of 28-10 (.737) and his victory total is tied for second in school history with Rob Bonanno (1991-94) behind Marc Valdes (31, 1991-93). The righty’s career ERA of 2.62 is the third-lowest by a Florida pitcher since aluminum bats were introduced in 1974 and his total of 52 starts trails only Bryan Ball (2003-06) and Valdes, who had 55 apiece. Randall rates fourth in school history with 315.2 innings pitched and he holds the Gators’ standard of fewest walks issued per nine innings (1.254). He finished with 204 strikeouts, permitted 44 walks and limited opponents to a .244 average.
The righty is also Florida’s all-time NCAA Tournament leader in innings pitched (58.2), strikeouts (50), games started (10) and wins (5). In 2012, Randall went 2-1 with a 0.66 ERA in helping the Orange and Blue advance to the College World Series for the third-consecutive campaign.
