Wednesday June 27, 2012UF Baseball's Austin Maddox Completes Deal With Boston Red Sox

Right-hander Austin Maddox (Jacksonville, Fla.) became the fifth member of the 2012 Gator baseball team to sign a professional contract when he came to terms with the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday. He had been chosen in the third round with the 118th overall pick and will forgo his final year of eligibility at the University of Florida.


A third-team All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA), Maddox had previously been voted onto to the organizationís third team as a freshman in 2010. The Gatorsí closer collected 12 saves, one shy of matching the schoolís single-season record, and was 3-3 with a 2.44 ERA. In 32 appearances covering 55.1 innings, the right-hander registered 57 strikeouts and issued 11 walks, while limiting opponents to a .206 batting average. Maddox saved all three wins over Florida State as the Orange and Blue posted its first regular-season series sweep of the Seminoles since 1958. He hit .265 (18-for-68) with five RBI, five walks, five runs and two doubles this season.


During his sophomore campaign, Maddox batted .280 with 35 RBI, 30 runs, 14 walks, six homers and three doubles in 62 starts - 41 at first base, 15 at third base, five as the designated hitter and one at catcher. He made 21 appearances out of the bullpen and was 3-0 with a 0.67 ERA, notching a team-high five saves in 27 innings of work. The right-hander registered 21 strikeouts, issued three walks and limited opponents to a .198 performance.


The SECís Freshman of the Year in 2010, Maddox was named a third-team All-American by the NCBWA that year, the first rookie from Florida to earn All-America recognition since Brad Wilkerson accomplished the feat in 1996. In addition, he was named to Freshman All-America teams by Baseball America, Lou≠isville Slugger, NCBWA and Yahoo! Sports, earned second-team All-SEC recognition and was named to the leagueís All-Freshman Team. Maddox started 63 games in four different spots that season - third base (29), designated hitter (19), first base (14) and catcher (1), hit .333 and held the top spot in RBI (72), multi-RBI games (21), homers (17), hit-by-pitches (eight) and sacrifice flies (five).


Maddox had a career pitching record of 6-3 (.667) in 53 appearances spanning 82.1 innings at Florida. He compiled a 1.86 ERA, totaled 78 strikeouts, picked up 17 saves and issued 14 walks. At the plate, the Jacksonville native hit .303 with 112 RBI, 83 runs, 26 walks, 23 homers and 21 doubles.
