Wednesday June 6, 2012UF's Greg Larson Taken On Final Day Of MLB Draft; Gators Finish With Nine Selections

Gainesville, Fla.

Senior right-hander Greg Larson (Longwood, Fla.) was chosen by the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday afternoon during the final day of the 2012 Major League Baseball Draft in the 20th round at No. 631 overall. Head coach Kevin O’Sullivan’s club tallied nine selections over the three-day event that spanned 40 rounds. The Gators have now had 39 picks in his five-year tenure (three in 2008, 10 in 2009, six in 2010 and 11 in 2011). Before O’Sullivan’s arrival, Florida’s previous high number of picks was eight in both 1999 and 2002.

Larson is 6-0 with a team-low 1.31 earned run average in 31 appearances this season for the top-ranked Gators (45-18), who will host No. 11 NC State (43-18) in the best-of-three NCAA Gainesville Super Regional beginning on Saturday at 2 p.m. (ESPNUHD). The righty rates second in school history with 118 appearances and is first on the school’s chart for postseason appearances by a pitcher (13). In 48 innings of work during his final collegiate campaign, Larson has registered 34 strikeouts and issued 10 walks, while holding opponents to a .195 batting average.

Named to the 2012 SEC Baseball Community Service Team for the second-straight year, Larson was a member of Florida’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and participated with Goodwill Gators by visiting children at Shands Hospital and in area schools. He also assisted with the “Miracle on Main Street” events, helping to provide Christmas gifts to more than 300 families and has worked as a counselor at several baseball camps, working with youngsters aged 5-18. Florida's male nominee for the SEC's H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship, Larson is active in Athletes in Action and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

As a junior, Larson was selected in the 29th round by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim with the 885th choice but elected to return to school. He ranked third on the Gators with 33 appearances last season and was 1-1 with a 2.09 ERA. The right y played a role in four of the team’s school-record 11 shutouts, struck out 30 batters and permitted seven walks in 38.2 innings. Larson compiled a 0.66 ERA and was 1-0 in 11 SEC appearances totaling 13.2 innings. He and Steven Rodriguez (Miami, Fla.) tied the school’s postseason record for appearances in a series with four at the NCAA College World Series.
