Wednesday May 30, 2012Florida Softball's Michelle Moultrie and Hannah Rogers Earn NFCA All-America Nods

Starkville, Miss.

Gator softball senior centerfielder Michelle Moultrie (Jacksonville, Fla.) and sophomore hurler Hannah Rogers (Lake Wales, Fla.) picked up National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-America honors to cap off the 2012 campaign, announced by the Starkville based organization Wednesday evening. Moultrie earned first-team honors, while Rogers was a second-team pick for the second time in her career donning the Orange and Blue.

For Moultrie and Rogers, the All-America accolades mark the second of both Gators’ careers, as the duo was additionally honored in 2011, Rogers on the second team and Moultrie on the third team last season. Since Florida head coach Tim Walton took over at the helm of the UF softball program, a total of 11 Gators have been named All-Americans, with those 11 athletes racking up 22 All-America honors.

Moultrie’s first-team selection makes it five-consecutive years for Florida with at least one first-team All-American, highlighted by three in 2011. UF has additionally had at least one All-American in each of the last six years. For Moultrie, the honor marks her second in a week’s span after picking up Academic All-America recognition last week, her second-consecutive year as both an athletic and academic All-American.

The 2012 SEC Player of the Year, Moultrie is a top-10 finalist for the 2012 Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award and was also a top-11 finalist for USA Softball’s Player of the Year. She was named to the 2012 All-SEC First Team and was additionally a 2012 All-Defensive pick for the second-consecutive year. Likewise, Rogers was an All-SEC Second Team selection and joined Moultrie as an All-Defensive Team pick for the second year in a row.

Moultrie, a 2012 USA Softball Women’s National Team member, graduated from UF May 5 with her undergraduate degree in Business Administration with a specialization in Sports Management. She concluded her tenure as a Gator with UF’s career stolen bases/attempts record, and leaves her mark in the UF record book as Florida’s career batting average leader (.386). Moultrie dropped a staggering 73 bunt singles at UF and will have the option to continue her career professionally after being drafted in the National Pro Fastpitch Senior Draft March 7 to the USSSA Florida Pride (Orlando).

Rogers ranks eighth in the country in ERA (1.23) and finished the 2012 season with a 28-8 overall record, bringing her career wins mark to 64. Rogers fanned 202 batters in 228.1 innings pitched this season, nearly one batter per inning. Her 28 victories rank her 15th in the country, while her four saves place her 16th among all NCAA hurlers.

Both Moultrie and Rogers were instrumental in UF’s success this season, leading Florida to a 48-13 overall record and a 21-7 SEC slate, Florida’s fifth straight 20-win league record, along with a trip to the SEC Tournament Championship game, the team’s fifth-ever appearance in the showdown.

Florida claimed victories over top-10 national seeds Alabama, Texas and Texas A&M, as well as series wins at Georgia and Tennessee to highlight the 2012 regular-season slate. For the 10th consecutive season, and 13th in program history, the University of Florida softball team hosted a NCAA Regional at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium after securing the No. 5 seed in the 2012 NCAA Tournament, the Gators’ fifth-consecutive season boasting a top-five national seed.

Moultrie and Rogers were among 54 student-athletes from 33 different institutions, representing 13 conferences, that earned the honor of being named to one of the three 2012 Division I NFCA All-American teams.
