Tuesday May 22, 2012Four Men's Tennis Players Set to Begin Play at NCAA Individual Championships on Wednesday
The draws have been announced for the 2012 NCAA Individual Championships, held May 23-28, and the Florida menís tennis team has three singles players and one doubles pair among the participants. Senior Nassim Slilam (Paris, France) and juniors Tripper Carleton (Naples, Fla.) and Bob van Overbeek (Boca Raton, Fla.) will compete for the NCAA singles title, while Slilam and junior Billy Federhofer (North Miami, Fla.) will compete in the doubles draw. The singles and doubles tournaments are hosted by the University of Georgia at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
In first-round action on Wednesday, May 23, van Overbeek will face the No. 8 overall seed, Sebastian Fanselow from Pepperdine. The Gators beat Pepperdine, 4-3, earlier in the season at the ITA National Indoor tournament, but Fanselow defeated van Overbeek, 6-4, 6-2, at the No. 1 singles position. Slilam will play Matija Pecotic of Princeton in the opening round while Carleton will face Virginia Techís Luka Somen.
Federhofer and Slilam, currently ranked 14th nationally, will play VCUís duo of Antoine Baroz and Alexis Heugas in the first round of the doubles draw on Thursday, May 24.
All three singles players and the doubles pair are playing in the individual championships for the first time.
