Four members of the Florida women’s tennis team will compete in the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships, as the draws that will be contested May 23-28, were released Tuesday morning by the NCAA Committee.

Gators earning a spot in the 64-player NCAA Singles Championships are junior Lauren Embree, senior Joanna Mather, sophomore Sofie Oyen and junior Allie Will, while the doubles team of Oyen & Will and Embree & Mather will compete in the 32-team doubles draw that runs from May 24-28, while the singles event will be played May 23-28 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.

Will is the No. 1 overall seed and received the SEC’s singles automatic qualifier. She reached the round of 16 of last year’s NCAA Singles Championships and used that momentum with a strong showing during the 2011 fall when she won the Riviera/ITA All-American Singles Championship and finished runner-up with Oyen on the doubles court in the prestigious national event. Oyen and Will earned the No. 1 overall seed.

Embree, who is seeded 9-16, advanced to the semifinals of the 2011 NCAA Singles Championships, where she retired due to injury. Mather will be making her second ever appearance in the NCAA Singles Championships. The Gator’s lone senior reached the finals of the USTA-ITA National Indoor Singles Championships in November, after winning the Riviera/ITA All-American Consolation Doubles Championship with Embree.

Will plays Notre Dame’s Shannon Mathews in her first round match, Embree meets Tulsa’s Anastasia Erofeeva, Oyen takes on South Florida’s Ecaterina Vasenina and Mather plays Duke’s Hanna Mar in a rematch of the NCAA Team Semifinals that the Gator won 2-6, 6-2, 6-0.

On the doubles court, Oyen and Will drew Baylor’s Ema Burgic and Nina Secerbegovic in the first round, while Embree and Mather will play Northwestern’s Linda Abu Mushrefova and Nida Hamilton.

Will is the first Gator to be seeded No. 1 in singles and doubles at the NCAA individual championships. It is just the third time in program history at Gator has been the No. 1 overall seed in the singles event, with Lisa Raymond earning the top spot in the 1992 and 1993 tournaments. Raymond went on to win the singles title both years.

On the doubles court, Oyen & Will’s No. 1 seed marks the fifth time a Gator tandem has received the No. 1 overall seed, joining Dawn Buth & Stephanie Nickitas (1996, 1997, 1998) and Jill Hetherington & Cathy Goodrich (1987). Buth and Nickitas won the NCAA Doubles Championship in 1996 and 1998.

Until Will this season, no Gator has ever been the No. 1 seed in both the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships during their career, never mind being the top seed in both during the same year. Nicole Arendt was the No. 3 singles seed in 1991 and No. 2 doubles seed (with Jillian Alexander), while Jessica Lehnhoff was the No. 3 seed in both in 2002 (doubles with Lindsay Dawaf).
