Monday May 21, 2012Shannon Gilroy Nabs Third National Rookie of the Week Honor
Florida midfielder Shannon Gilroy (Northport, N.Y.) was named WomensLax.com National Rookie of the Week this morning after helping to lead the Gators past Penn State on Saturday to earn Florida’s first-ever trip to the Final Four. This is the third National Rookie of the Week honor this month for Gilroy, who earned the honor from both WomensLax.com and SynapseSports.com on May 7 after putting up seven goals against Northwestern in the ALC Championship Game.
The Northport, N.Y., native brought her “A” game on Saturday with the Gators’ season on the line, once again earning her moniker as the team’s “draw specialist”. Gilroy led Florida with six draw controls and gave her team a significant possession advantage, with a 15-4 overall edge on the draws. The Gators have held a 43-11 advantage on draw controls over the past three games with Gilroy at center circle.
The freshman also added two goals and an assist in the 15-2 Quarterfinal victory over Penn State. Gilroy’s efforts helped Florida to become the youngest program ever to earn two NCAA Tournament wins and advance to the Final Four. The top-seeded Gators will head to Stony Brook, N.Y., to play the fourth-seeded Syracuse Orange on Friday at 5:30 p.m. in the NCAA Semifinals.
