Senior Joanna Mather and the Gators play Miami in the NCAA Quarterfinals.

Second-seeded Florida will play 10th-seeded Miami in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Women’s Tennis Championships at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on Saturday at 4 p.m. ET.

The Gators (24-1) defeated No. 15 Michigan, 4-0, late Thursday night, won their 19th consecutive match and recorded the 899th victory in program history to reach the quarterfinals for the 26th time in the 31-year history of the event.

The Hurricanes (21-4) produced the only upset in the round of 16 when they knocked off No. 7 North Carolina, 4-2.

Florida leads the all-time series against Miami, 36-21, including a 4-2 record in NCAA matches. Saturday will be the third consecutive season the two teams will meet in the NCAA quarterfinal round. Florida earned the 4-1 victory in last year’s event and the 4-0 win in the 2010 NCAA Championships. Prior to those victories, the Hurricanes stunned the Gators with a 4-3 decision in the 2004 NCAA round of 32 played in Gainesville.

“Miami is a really feisty team and they fight really hard,” UF head coach Roland Thornqvist said. “They have a high ball tolerance in that they can go deep into a count in exchanges. They play a lot like we do so we have to be ready for long rallies and a mindset to be able to counter that. Whoever we play we just want to go out and execute and play good tennis. Yesterday we were anxious to get out there with the rain delay and not having played a week since our last match. In certain spots against Michigan (on Thursday), we played about as well as we’ve played all year and it couldn’t come at a better time of the year.”

On Thursday against Michigan, Florida needed a comeback win from the doubles pair of Lauren Embree (Marco Island, Fla.) and Joanna Mather (Duluth, Ga.) to earn the doubles point and that Gators carried that momentum onto the singles courts where they won the first set on all six courts, with Embree, Olivia Janowicz (Palm Bay, Fla.) and Sofie Oyen (Leopoldsburg, Belgium) able to finish quickly and secure the team victory shortly before midnight.

Embree and Mather won their 23rd consecutive match together and are one win shy of the second longest streak in program history.

Embree and Mather also sport individual 16-match win streaks on the singles court, while Oyen and Allie Will (Boca Raton, Fla.) both their last nine outings.

The Gators are21-4 all-time in the NCAA Quarterfinals, where they have won their three trips at this round of the event.
