PREVIEWING THE GATORS IN THE POSTSEASON

Ø  The No. 6 Gator softball team - also the No. 5 overall seed in the 2012 NCAA Tournament - stands at 46-11 overall entering the postseason. Florida will host a NCAA Regional for the 10th consecutive season and the 13th all-time in UF history.

Ø  The Orange and Blue enter the NCAA Tournament as the No. 5 overall seed – the fifth-consecutive year with a top-five seed – after advancing to the championship game of the SEC Tournament for just the fifth time in school history May 12

Ø  Florida is 21-16 (.567) in NCAA Regionals, 9-2 (.818) in Super Regionals and 11-9 (.550) in the Women’s College World Series for an overall record of 41-27 (.602) in the NCAA Tournament. UF became the first SEC institution to make four-consecutive WCWS appearances last season, including competing for the National Championship in both 2009 and 2011 (championship series), finishing as the national runner-up both years.

Ø  Florida is 2-2 this season against its Regional draw, after having setbacks against USF at home (L, 4-1) and UCF (L, 2-0) on the road, while securing wins over USF (W, 3-2; 8 inn) and FGCU (W, 5-0) in UF’s season-opening tourney in Tampa.

Ø  Florida checked in at No. 7 in the latest RPI rankings, released Monday by the NCAA. The Gators rank seventh in the country in ERA (1.46), 10th in win percentage (.807), 16th in fielding percentage (.974) and 18th in slugging percentage (.483). Individually, sophomore pitcher Hannah Rogers is 12th in the NCAA in ERA (1.25) and 15th in wins (27). Freshman Sami Fagan’s five triples place her 13th in the nation in the category.

Ø  The Gators wrapped up the SEC Tournament May 10-12 with a 2-1 record in Tuscaloosa last weekend, defeating LSU and Tennessee on Thursday and Friday to advance to the program’s fifth-ever SEC Tournament Championship Game. Florida fell short to Alabama in Sunday’s contest.

Ø  Friday’s win over Tennessee was a big one, not only counting as UF’s fourth extra-innings win this season, but also as Florida head coach Tim Walton’s 500th career victory as a head coach. Walton is 500-155 (.763) all-time in his 10th season as a head coach, becoming the fastest active coach in the Southeastern Conference to reach 500 wins.

Ø  A total of seven Gators were named as All-SEC selections, highlighted by senior Michelle Moultrie, who picked up UF’s fourth ever SEC Player of the Year honor. Moultrie also secured First Team All-SEC honors in the outfield, while sophomore hurler Hannah Rogers and junior catcher Kelsey Horton were named Second Team All-SEC selections. Rogers and Moultrie were additionally SEC All-Defensive picks. A total of four first-year Gators were Freshman All-SEC selections in Alyssa Bache (p), Lauren Haeger (IF), Sami Fagan (IF) and Jessica Damico (OF). The quartet ties with 2008’s four Freshman All-SEC picks for the most in program history. Rogers made it two-straight years as an All-SEC pick, Moultrie three straight. Horton was a league honoree for the first time since being an All-Freshman pick. She was also named to the SEC Community Service Team. Horton and Moultrie were additionally tabbed Capital One Academic All-District 4 First Team honorees.

Ø  Four Gators were named to the NFCA Division I All-Southeast Region teams, as Hannah Rogers (P), Michelle Moultrie (OF) and freshman Lauren Haeger (UT/P) picked up first team honors, while Kelsey Horton (C) was a second team honoree.

Ø  Michelle Moultrie is up for two postseason awards as a Top-10 Finalist for both the 2012 Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award and USA Softball’s Player of the Year.

It took four scoreless innings of both teams battling at the plate before Florida put up four runs in the top of the fifth after making adjustments to a tough FGCU hurler in Shelby Morgan, who shouldered the loss for the Eagles after giving up five of Florida’s seven hits in the contest and four of UF’s five runs. Morgan fanned six Gators, all in the first three innings. The Eagles traded Morgan for Britney Pugh for the final 2.1 innings, but the damage was done as Florida added another run in the sixth on a freshman Sami Fagan RBI double.

Last Time Out: March 28, 2012 (USF 4, UF 1)

Despite pounding out six hits as a team, led by freshman Bailey Castro’s 2-for-3 performance, the Florida softball squad dropped just its third game of the season, falling 4-1 to No. 21 USF in a mid-week, non-conference match up. For the second time in 2012, the two squads met as Florida out-lasted USF, 3-2, in eight innings Feb. 12 in both  team’s season-opening tournament action in Tampa. A sharper USF squad connected for eight hits, capitalized on two Gator defensive miscues and rallied behind ace Sara Nevins, who owned the nation’s best ERA (0.55) entering the match-up, to snap Florida’s 16-game home win streak. The Bulls jumped on top of the Gators from the get-go, putting up two quick runs in the first inning, while following with two in the third for their four overall. Haeger accounted for UF’s lone run in the game off a solo shot in the fourth inning.
