Sunday May 13, 2012Gator Softball Picks Up No. 5 National Seed for 2012 NCAA Tournament; Will Host Gainesville Regional May 18-20

2012 NCAA SOFTBALL GAINESVILLE REGIONAL CENTRAL

For the 10th consecutive season, the University of Florida softball team will host a NCAA Regional at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium after securing the No. 5 seed in the 2012 NCAA Tournament, the Gators’ fifth –consecutive season boasting a top-five national seed. The Gainesville Regional will feature an all-Sunshine State feel as the Orange and Blue (46-11) will host the softball squads from FGCU (37-22), UCF (39-17) and USF (45-11).

Play will open with the first round of the tournament May 18 at 3:30 p.m. as UCF and USF take to the field first, while Florida and FGCU will square off at 6 p.m.  Action will continue Saturday and Sunday in the double-elimination format. Florida’s selection marks the 13th year the Gators will host a Regional in the friendly confines of Pressly Stadium, including each year with head coach Tim Walton at the helm of the program.  

The winner of the Gainesville Regional will play the winner of the Los Angeles Regional, featuring the No. 12 seed and host, UCLA (36-18), in addition to San Diego State (30-22), FSU (46-14) and Hofstra (38-13). The highest remaining seed will host the Super Regional.

The Gators are 21-16 in NCAA Regional play, including 12-2 the past three seasons, having advanced to an unprecedented four-consecutive Women’s College World Series, including appearances in the WCWS Championship Series in both 2009 and 2011. Under Walton’s tutelage, Florida is 16-4 in Regional play and the Orange and Blue own a 41-27 (.602) all-time record in the NCAA Tournament.

Florida is 2-2 this season against the Gainesville Regional field, having defeated its first-round opponent FGCU 5-0 Feb. 12 in UF’s season-opening tournament, hosted by USF in Tampa. Just prior to UF’s win over FGCU, the Gators picked up their first extra-innings victory of the season, a 3-2, eight-inning win over USF. The Bulls then took a trip to Gainesville March 28 and came out of KSP Stadium with a 4-1 win to avenge their earlier loss. Two weeks later April 11, the Gators took on UCF in a mid-week tilt in Orlando, a match-up the Knights won 2-0 at home.

Florida fans can visit the Gator Ticket Office beginning Monday morning starting at 8:30 a.m. for ticket packages to this year’s 2012 NCAA Gainesville Regional. All UF students gain free admission with Gator 1 ID card. All session passes are $25 for adults and $10 for children 12 & under, seniors (55+) and non-UF college students with proof of college ID. Single game tickets cost $10 for an adult ticket and $5 for children 12 & under, seniors (55+) and non-UF college students with proof of college ID.
