Monday May 7, 2012Shannon Gilroy Named WomensLax.com, SynapseSports.com National Rookie of the Week
Freshman midfielder Shannon Gilroy (Northport, N.Y) was named National Rookie of the Week by both WomensLax.com and SynapseSports.com after her lights-out performance in the American Lacrosse Conference Tournament. Gilroy is the second Gator to earn each award in 2012, following classmate Nora Barry’s (Marcellus, N.Y) nod from WomensLax.com on Apr. 9 following the Johns Hopkins game and from Synapsports.com on Apr. 24. This is the second week that Gilroy has been honored, being named ALC Rookie of the Week and to the SynapseSports.com National Honor Roll on Apr. 3 following her performance at Penn State.
Gilroy led the Florida Gators to a milestone win over the No. 1 Northwestern Wildcats in the ALC Tournament Championship on Saturday. The rookie middie proved herself as a draw specialist, leading UF to win 18 of the 23 draws on Saturday, facing off against one of the strongest draw-takers in the nation in Alyssa Leonard.
On the offensive end, the freshman led the team in scoring with seven goals, which is just one shy of the Gators’ team record and ties Kitty Cullen’s (Rockville, Md.) team record against ALC opponents, set against Penn State last season. To qualify for the Championship game, Florida had to get past Ohio State first; Gilroy contributed three ground balls, three draw controls and a caused turnover in the tightly contested 5-4 victory. With over 2,400 fans in attendance throughout the weekend, the Gators claimed their first-ever ALC Championship in the program’s short history, and secured the No. 1 overall seed for the NCAA Tournament.
Florida returns to action on Saturday, when the Gators host Albany in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament. Opening draw for the first matchup between the two teams is set for 1 p.m.
