Monday May 7, 2012UF Baseball's Casey Turgeon Named SEC Freshman Of The Week
University of Florida second baseman Casey Turgeon (Palm Harbor, Fla.) was chosen as the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week on Monday for the first time after helping the No. 5 Gators (35-13/14-10 SEC) to an important road series win over No. 6 Kentucky in Lexington.
During the weekend set with the Wildcats, Turgeon hit .400 (4-for-10) as the Gators took the first two games by scores of 5-3 and 5-1 and dropped the finale, 2-1. In Friday night’s series-clinching victory, with the game knotted at a run apiece, the rookie led off the eighth inning with his second triple of the campaign and scored the winning run on a one-out single by classmate Josh Tobias (Greensboro, N.C.). Turgeon matched his career high with three hits (3-for-4) and also added a theft as part of a double steal. In Thursday night’s nationally-televised opener on ESPNU, he was 1-for-2 with a walk and sacrifice bunt.
On the season, Turgeon has started 47 of the team’s 48 games at second base and is batting .277 with 26 runs, 20 walks, 18 RBI, seven doubles, three homers and a pair of triples, to go along with eight stolen bases in 11 attempts.
LSU sophomore second baseman JaCoby Jones was tabbed as the SEC Player of the Week, while Georgia sophomore left-hander Alex Wood was the league’s Pitcher of the Week. The No. 5 Gators return to action on Tuesday at 7 p.m. to face North Florida (28-20/9-12 A-Sun) at McKethan Stadium. Freshman right-hander Johnny Magliozzi (East Milton, Mass.) (4-2, 3.41) will draw the start against Osprey junior southpaw Josh Gonzaga (4-2, 3.55).
