Camilla Hedberg and Mia Piccio

University of Florida women’s golfers, Camilla Hedberg (Sitges, Spain) and Mia Piccio (Bacolod City, Philippines) were recognized by the Southeastern Conference Friday, earning Second Team All-SEC honors for their performances during the 2011-12 season. Along with Second Team honors, Hedberg was also named the SEC Freshman of the Year and placed on the SEC All-Freshman Team.

“It’s an honor to be placed on any SEC Team, because of how competitive our conference is,” head coach Jan Dowling said. “Both Mia and Camilla have been consistent scoring leaders for our team, and I’m very proud of their recognition.”

Hedberg becomes the seventh golfer in UF women’s golf history to be named the conference’s Freshman of the Year. Hedberg and Piccio’s selections mark the 11th consecutive year that Florida has been represented on the SEC’s First or Second Team. 2008 marks the last time at least two Gators were selected to the SEC’s First or Second Team.

“Camilla is certainly deserving of the SEC Freshmen of the Year award,” Dowling explained “She has had a heck of a season so far, with four top-10 finishes, including the last three tournaments we have played. I am very proud of her, and she should look back on this season with great pride, against a great freshmen class in the SEC.”

Hedberg, named SEC Golfer of the Week twice during the 2012 campaign, leads the team in stroke average with 73.25. The Spaniard has recorded three under par tournaments this year. She has finished in the top-10 in three consecutive tournaments, including tying for second place at the Gator Women’s Invitational. Hedberg also leads the team in birdies with 79.

Piccio, who gained All-SEC Second Team honors for the second consecutive season, leads the team in rounds counted (25.5-of-27) and pars (310). She has five top-25 finishes this season, highlighted by finishing in a tie for seventh at the SEC/PAC-12 Challenge.

No. 14 Florida will head to State College, Pa. to compete in the NCAA East Regional from May 10-12. The Gators are attempting to advance to the NCAA Championships for the second consecutive year and the 23rd time in school history. The top eight teams in the 24-team field and two individuals not on those eight teams will progress.
