Wednesday May 2, 2012Four Men's Tennis Players Selected for 2012 NCAA Men's Tennis Individual Championships
Florida menís tennis had three singles players and one doubles pair selected to participate in the 2012 NCAA Individual Championships, held May 23-28 at the University of Georgiaís Dan Magill Tennis Complex. The NCAA announced on Wednesday that senior Nassim Slilam (Paris, France) and juniors Tripper Carleton (Naples, Fla.) and Bob van Overbeek (Boca Raton, Fla.) will all have a chance to compete for the NCAA singles title, while Slilam and junior Billy Federhofer (North Miami, Fla.) will compete in the doubles draw.
All three UF players in the singles draw were named to the All-SEC Second Team last week and will be making their first appearances in the 64-player singles draw. All three players are ranked in the top 60 nationally in the latest ITA Rankings. Sophomore Spencer Newman (Miami, Fla.) was listed as an alternate for the singles draw.
Federhofer and Slilam, currently ranked 14th nationally, will be making their first appearance in the 32-tandem doubles draw. Only a participant list has been announced at this time, with the draw to be set at a later date.
In total, the SEC placed 21 players in the singles draw, as well as having three of the eight alternates for the field. Eight of the 32 doubles pairs in the field come from the SEC.
The singles and doubles tournaments take place following the team championships, also hosted by Georgia. The Gators open NCAA Regional play on Saturday, May 12, hosting Navy at 12 p.m. The winner of that match will face Harvard or Virginia Tech at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex on Sunday, May 13, at 2 p.m. with a trip to the finals site on the line.
