Tuesday May 1, 2012Men's 4x400-Meter Relay Earns SEC Men's Runners of the Week Honors
The Florida menís 4x400-meter relay team, composed of Dedric Dukes (Miami, Fla.), Hugh Graham, Jr. (Miami, Fla.), Leonardo Seymore (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) and Tony McQuay (Riviera Beach, Fla.), earned Southeastern Conference Co-Menís Runners of the Week honors for their exceptional performance this past weekend at the 103rd Annual Drake Relays, the league offices in Birmingham, Ala., announced Tuesday.
The Gator quartet clocked a season-best time of 3:02.41 to win the menís 4x400-meter relay event at Drake Relays, turning in the eighth-best time in school history, the best time in the SEC this season and the No. 2 time in the nation this year.
Florida was the only team in the finals to start out with two freshmen on the first two legs, and McQuay torched the track for a time of 44.03 on the anchor leg.
The Gators now own nine weekly honors in 2012, as the menís 4x100-meter relay team earned the same honor a week ago. Senior sprinter Jeff Demps (Winter Garden, Fla.) and junior sprinter Lanie Whittaker (Miami, Fla.) were each honored for their performances at the 85th Annual Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays and 68th Annual Pepsi Florida Relays, respectively.
Former Gator All-American thrower Kemal Mesic (Sarajevo, Bosnia) earned SEC Menís Field Athlete of the Week honors twice during the indoor season, bookending a weekly honor for freshman jumper Taylor Burke (Medina, Ohio), who was named SEC Co-Womenís Freshman of the Week earlier in the indoor season.
The Gator men and women are off this upcoming weekend before traveling to Baton Rouge for the 2012 SEC Outdoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by LSU. The four-day meet takes place Thursday-Sunday, May 10-13, at Bernie Moore Track Stadium. Championship Central can be found here.
