Thursday April 19, 2012Gators Play Tennessee in SEC Women's Tennis Tournament QF Friday

Top-seeded Florida begins its run toward a third consecutive Southeastern Conference Tournament title on Friday when the Gators play eighth-seeded Tennessee in the quarterfinals at Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center on the Ole Miss campus.

 

Florida, which sports a stellar 24-0 all-time record in the quarterfinal round, earned a 7-0 home win against the Lady Vols (14-10) on March 2 in Gainesville in the SEC-opener for both teams. Tennessee defeated Auburn, 4-2, winning the doubles point and battling to win three singles matches after the Tigers claimed the first set on four of the courts in Thursday’s first round match.

 

The match between the third-ranked Gators (18-1) and the 20th-ranked Lady Vols is the fourth and final quarterfinal match scheduled for Friday, with an expected start time of 7 p.m. ET/6 p.m. CT.

 

Florida is 38-0 all-time against Tennessee, including a 7-0 record in SEC Tournament action.

 

Florida has won 13 consecutive matches entering Friday’s match, as well as 41 straight against SEC teams.

 

The Gators won the SEC regular-season title outright and earned the No. 1 seed in the league’s postseason event, allowing them a first-round bye.

 

The Gators have won 17 of the 24 SEC Tournament titles (1982, ’90, ’91, ’92, ’93, ’95, ’96, ’97, ’98, ’00, ’02, ‘03, ‘04, ‘05 , ‘06, ‘10 & ‘11). Georgia has claimed six crowns (1983, ‘94, 2001 & ’07, ‘08, ‘09), while Ole Miss captured the 1999 tournament.

 

Florida, which boasts a 63-7 all-time record in SEC Tournament action, has advanced to the finals of the SEC Tournament in 22 of the 24 years the event has been played, capturing 16 titles.
