The 2012 Southeastern Conference champion Florida women’s tennis team will be the No. 1 seed in the SEC Tournament that begins Thu., April 19 at Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center/Galtney Courts in Oxford, Miss., hosted by Ole Miss.
The Gators (18-1) earned one of four first-round byes and will play their quarterfinal match at 7 p.m. ET (6 p.m. CT) against the winner of the match between No. 8-seed Tennessee and No. 9-seed Auburn. Florida swept both the Lady Vols and the Tigers on the road this year.
Florida has been either the No. 1 or No. 2 seed in the SEC Tournament 22 times in the 24-year history of the event. The two exceptions were in 2005, when the Gators entered the tournament with the No. 3 seed before winning the title, and in 2009, when the team fell in the semifinals as the No. 4 seed.
On Saturday at South Carolina, the Gators closed out their regular season slate with a perfect 11-0 record for a third consecutive undefeated conference mark and the 21st time in program history.
The Gators have won 17 of the 24 SEC Tournament titles (1982, ’90, ’91, ’92, ’93, ’95, ’96, ’97, ’98, ’00, ’02, ‘03, ‘04, ‘05 , ‘06, ‘10 & ‘11). Georgia has claimed six crowns (1983, ‘94, 2001 & ’07, ‘08, ‘09), while Ole Miss captured the 1999 tournament on its home court.
Florida boasts a 63-7 all-time record in SEC Tournament action, with six of those losses coming against Georgia and the other to Ole Miss.
Florida has advanced to the finals of the SEC Tournament in 22 of the 24 years the event has been played, capturing 16 titles.
The Gators have won the SEC Tournament title in seven of the 10 years under head coach Roland Thornqvist, finishing runner-up in 2007 & 2008.
