Gainesville, Fla.

UF vs. UCF Game Notes

After winning its sixth SEC series of the season with a sweep over Ole Miss at home April 6-8, the No. 3/4 Gator softball team will take one more mid-week road trip before an 11-game home stand to wrap up April play when the squad visits UCF in Orlando Wednesday. First pitch between the Gators and Knights is set for 6:30 p.m. from the UCF Softball Complex.

Wednesday’s game will air live on Bright House Sports Network in the Orlando and Tampa markets. Gator fans can follow live, online stats through Gametracker or tune in live locally or online to WYGC 104.9 FM, 105 The Game, with the call by Gator play-by-play Adam Schick and former Gator All-American Megan Bush.

Powered by three home runs and eight RBI from freshman designated player Bailey Castro (Pembroke Pines, Fla.), the Gator softball team chalked up four more wins last week with a sweep over Ole Miss in league play, preceded by a 9-1 run-rule victory at No. 21 FSU in mid-week action. In addition to Castro’s contributions, classmate Sami Fagan (Dunnellon, Fla.) stepped it up for the Orange and Blue as well, earning SEC Freshman of the Week honors for the second time this season, contributing to UF’s nine overall league and national weekly honors in 2012.

Florida improved to 35-4 overall, 15-2 in SEC play and to 7-4 this season against Top-25 opponents. UF has now won all six of its conference series thus far in 2012, including four by sweep. The Gators added three run-rule victories over FSU and two against the Rebels, bringing their total this season to 15. Additionally, Florida used a two-hit shutout from sophomore hurler Hannah Rogers (Lake Wales, Fla.) Friday to tally its 18th shut out of the season, Rogers’ eighth complete-game shutout of the campaign.

Castro had a record-breaking day Sunday, smacking two homers in one inning, including her first career grand slam, UF’s third of the season, while accounting for a single-game, school-record tying seven RBI in the win. Castro knocked three of her four career homers this season in the series with Ole Miss.

Fagan, who ranks second the Gators’ squad this season in batting clip (.370) and hits (47), had a career-best week, sending her first career homer over the fence against the Seminoles last Wednesday, finishing the day with a season-best three RBI. Fagan then struck with a double and a triple in UF’s sweep over the Rebels at home this weekend, having now reached base in all but three of UF’s 39 games in 2012. Fagan, who has 16 multiple-hit games for the Gators, is currently riding a five-game hit streak, second only to a seven-game strand earlier this season. Of her 20 RBI this season for Florida, a third – or seven RBI – came in the last week of play, as the freshman sent at least one home in all four games, highlighted by three versus FSU and two Sunday against the Rebels.

Rogers earned the win in three of UF’s contests to improve to 20-2 in the circle this year, while freshman Alyssa Bache (Clearwater, Fla.) worked her third complete game Sunday for her fifth win (5-0), while fanning a season-best five Rebels.

Florida next clashes with Auburn in a three-game set to kick off their four remaining SEC series April 13-15 at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium. Game times are 6 p.m., 1 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
