Monday April 9, 2012Softball's Sami Fagan is SEC Freshman of the Week
First year Gator softball third baseman Sami Fagan (Dunnellon, Fla.) picked up her second league weekly honor Monday, earning SEC Freshman of the Week accolades for the first time since picking up the first Freshman of the Week honor of the season February 19.
Fagan helped lead the Gator softball squad to four wins throughout the last week of play, including their seventh victory over a Top-25 opponent with the 9-1, six-inning win at No. 21 FSU April 4 in mid-week action. The No. 6 Gators then went on to complete a series sweep over Ole Miss at home this past weekend, using one shutout and two run-rule victories to secure a fourth conference series sweep. Florida has now won all six of its conference series, and with a 15-2 league record, sits atop the 2012 SEC Standings after play this weekend.
Fagan, who ranks second the Gators’ squad this season in batting clip (.370) and hits (47), had a career-best week, sending her first career homer over the fence against the Seminoles last Wednesday, finishing the day with a season-best three RBI. Fagan then struck with a double and a triple in UF’s sweep over the Rebels at home this weekend, having now reached base in all but three of UF’s 39 games in 2012. Fagan, who has 16 multiple-hit games for the Gators, is currently riding a five-game hit streak, second only to a seven-game strand earlier this season, having connected in each of UF’s games since the series finale at Georgia April 1.
Of her 20 RBI this season for Florida, a third – or seven RBI – came in the last week of play, as the freshman sent at least one home in all four games, highlighted by three versus FSU and two Sunday against the Rebels. On the weekend, Sami had a team-high five hits and 12 at-bats, a double, triple, homer, ranked second to classmate Bailey Castro with her seven RBI, ranked second with a .917 slugging percentage and scored a team-best six runs.
With Fagan’s honor, the Orange and Blue have now racked up nine conference and national accolades thus far through the 2012 campaign.
The Gators will hit the road one last time in the month of April with a mid-week match-up against UCF in Orlando Wednesday. Florida will then return home to the friendly confines of Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium to host Auburn April 13-15, FIU April 20-21, LSU in a mid-week doubleheader April 24 and Kentucky April 27-29 before hitting the road again to finish up the remainder of the SEC slate in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
