Saturday April 7, 2012McCumber Leads Gators on Day One of Gary Koch Invitational

Tampa, Fla.

The Florida men’s golf team used two rounds of 293 (+5) to finish the day in 586 (+10) strokes to sit in eighth place heading into the final round of the Gary Koch Invitational played at Old Memorial Golf Club.

“We just didn’t get anything to go our way today,” said head coach Buddy Alexander. “We just didn’t have it today. We didn’t really have a great round out of 10 on a course that was awesome and that was frustrating.”

Junior Tyler McCumber (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) led the way for the Orange and Blue firing rounds of 73 and 72 to sit at one-over for the tournament in tie for 17th place. McCumber used a trio of birdies countered by four bogeys on his first 18. After a slow start of three-over thru eight holes on his second round, McCumber was able to right the ship with a birdie at the par-5 ninth. The junior then ran off three birdies in four holes (12, 13 and 15) to drop his score to even for the tournament. A bogey at the par-3 17th and a par at the par-4 18th ended McCumber’s day in 145 strokes.

Junior T.J. Vogel (Cooper City, Fla.) was the lone Gator to shoot a round under par on the day when he carded a one-under 71 on his opening round. After starting out the day with eight consecutive pars, Vogel made a birdie on the par-5 ninth. After bogeys at 10 and 11, Vogel carded his third eagle of the season on the par-5 12th. After a bogey at 14 brought him back to even for the round, Vogel made another birdie at a par-5, this time at the 16th, to get back in the red. A pair of par’s closed out his 71 for the first 18. Unfortunately for the Gators, Vogel could not keep his form on the second 18 as he posted a 76 on an eagle, a birdie, five bogeys and a double. Vogel currently sits in a tie for 25th place for the tournament after his 147 (+3).

J.D. Tomlinson (Gainesville, Fla.) had both of his rounds count for UF on the day. In the morning, the freshman posted a 73 (+1) on three birdies and four bogeys. In the afternoon, Tomlinson made one birdie against four bogeys for a 75 (+3).

Freshman Eric Banks (Truro, Canada) and senior Michael Furci (Sayville, N.Y.) each finished their opening days in 150 (+6) strokes. Banks used rounds of 78 (+6) and 72 (E), while Furci had scores of 76 (+4) and 74 (+2).

The Gators will return to the course tomorrow morning when they open their final round of play at 8:45 a.m.  Live scoring for the final round will be available through www.golfstat.com.
