After carding the lowest team score of the final round, the University of Florida women’s golf team climbed up the leaderboard to finish in third-place at the 2012 Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic. The Gators’ final round 283 (-5) was the second-lowest round of the tournament. UF finished with a tournament total of 867 (286-298-283, +3), one shot back of host school University of Georgia.

“That was one heck of a round today and I am very proud of the entire them. We were the low round by 6 shots today, on a great test of golf,” said head coach Jan Dowling

Senior Evan Jensen (Belleair, Fla.) paced the Gators with a tournament total of 213 (71-70-72, -3), while recording her best finish of the year, a tie for sixth. Jensen had only seven bogeys throughout the tournament, her lowest total this season.

“I am very proud of Evan. She finished strong in a great field of players. She didn't hit the ball as well today, and fought hard to post a very good score,” Dowling added.

Tying her best finish this season, senior Andrea Watts (Bradenton, Fla.) finished tied for 15th after shooting her first under par round of the season with a third round 69 (-3). Watts finished with a 54-hole total of 217 (73-75-69, +1).

Freshman Camilla Hedberg (Sitges, Spain) finished in the top-10 for the third time this season after tying for 10th-place. Hedberg handed in a tournament total of 214 (69-75-70, -2).

“Both Camilla and Andrea hit the ball superbly today, resulting in under par scores. They sure stepped up big time,” Dowling said.

Junior Mia Piccio (Bacolod City, Philippines) carded her best round of the tournament on the final day with a 72 (E). Piccio finished in a tie for 33rd after shooting a 223 (73-78-72, +7) throughout the tournament.

“Mia had a great comeback after her front-nine yesterday, and she should be proud of that,” Dowling said “She has learned a lot this week, and excited for the post season for her.”

Junior Isabelle Lendl (Goshen, Conn.) shot a five-over 77 in the final round to give her a tournament total of 234 (+18).

Second-ranked Alabama won the team title shooting a 10-under 854 at the UGA Golf Club. The Crimson tide finished 12 shots better than second-place Georgia. Jennifer Kirby of Alabama won medalist honors after posting a seven-under 209 through 54 holes.

The conclusion of the Liz Murphey marks the end of the Gators’ regular season schedule. UF will have nearly three weeks off to prepare for the SEC Championship in Fayetteville, Ark. The tournament will be played at Blessings Golf Club Friday, April 20 through Sunday, April 22.

“Our entire team executed very well and this certainly gives our team a lot of confidence heading into the post season,” Dowling explained.
