Saturday March 31, 2012Gators Tied for Fifth Entering Final Round at Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic

Athens, Ga.

Evan Jensen

The 17th-ranked University of Florida women’s golf team sits in a tie for fifth after handing in a second round 298 (+10) at the 2012 Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic.  The Gators have a two-day total of 584 (+8) and will enter the final round in position to capture their sixth top-five finish this season.

“Overall, we had a very mediocre day. Our putting and short games were cold on the front-nine, but we went one under on our back on a golf course that played very difficult today,” said head coach Jan Dowling. “We plan to use the momentum we built from the back-nine, for our final round, to catch some teams in front of us, and see what happens.”

Senior Evan Jensen (Belleair, Fla.), who shot a one-under 71 in round one, carded a two-under 70 during the second 18 holes despite going two-over on her first nine holes on Saturday. Jensen bounced back to shoot four-under in her final nine holes. The senior shot a combined three under on par threes during round two. Jensen will enter the final round tied for seventh and three shots back of the leader.

“I couldn't be more proud of Evan today,” explained Dowling “She was the definition of toughness. After making 3 bogeys in a row, she continued to trust herself and maintained a confident demeanor. It proves that a great mental approach can turn any round of golf into a very good one.”

Freshman Camilla Hedberg (Sitges, Spain), tied for 14th after 36 holes, shot a second round 75 (+5) after a first round 69 (-3). Hedberg had one birdie against four bogeys on Saturday.

Senior Andrea Watts (Bradenton, Fla.) will enter the final round tied for 29th with a 36-hole total of 148 (73-75, +4). Like Hedberg, Watts recorded one birdie against four bogeys during the second round.

Junior Mia Piccio (Bacolod City, Philippines) has a two-day total of 151 (73-78, +7) and after a second round 80 (+8), Isabelle Lend has a tournament total of 157 (+13).

Second-ranked Alabama, with a tournament total 565 (278-287, -11) holds an eight-stroke lead over host school Georgia. Alabama’s Jennifer Kirby, who led after round one, takes a one-stroke lead into the final round.

Tee times begin at 9 a.m. ET tomorrow at the UGA Golf Club in Athens, Ga.
