Monday March 26, 2012Michelle Moultrie Tabbed SEC Player of the Week
For her .727 batting clip, three doubles and two homers in UF’s series sweep over Arkansas last weekend, senior All-American centerfielder Michelle Moultrie (Jacksonville, Fla.) has been named this week’s SEC Player of the Week. Monday’s honor marks Moultrie’s first accolade this season and UF’s seventh conference or national weekly honor this year.
The 2011 WCWS co-Most Outstanding Player carried the Gators through the last week of play, going 8-for-11 with three doubles, two homers, four RBI, six runs scored and a stolen base, while registering a 1.545 slugging percentage and .750 on-base mark as the Gators downed the Razorbacks 6-0, 3-2 and 5-0 through the three-game weekend set in Fayetteville.
As a team, Florida rallied for six doubles and four home runs, while scoring 14 runs, compared to Arkansas’ two en route to their 16th and 17th shutout victories of the season Friday and Sunday.
Moultrie, who entered the weekend ranked sixth in the country in triples and ninth in runs per game, went 4-for-4 with a stolen base and two doubles as the Orange and Blue opened the series with a 6-0 win over the Hogs Friday, a season-best and career-tying performance for UF’s sole senior. Moultrie then struck again Saturday and Sunday with 2-for-4 and 2-for-3 performances, respectively, homering in each and adding her third double of the series Saturday to propel the Gators to their fifth-consecutive series sweep over Arkansas.
Moultrie, UF’s career stolen bases leader, now leads this year’s Florida squad with 15 multiple hit games, connecting for a hit in 22 of UF’s 31 games this season. She’s registered at least one hit in 112 of 138 games since her sophomore season in 2010 and reached base safely in all but four contests this year.
Midway through the 2012 campaign, Moultrie leads the Gators in hits (42), runs (40), slugging percentage (.839), batting clip (.452), triples (4), stolen bases (17) and attempts (19), while ranking second in doubles (4) and homers (8).
The Gators will return to the diamond Wednesday for a mid-week tilt with USF in the second meeting between the two teams this season. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. and the contest will air live on FS Florida. The Bulls and Gators met earlier this year Feb. 12 in Tampa as part of the USF Fairfield Inn & Suites Tampa North Tournament, a game the Gators won 3-2 in eight innings for their first extra-innings victory of the season.
After hosting the Bulls Wednesday, Florida will head to Athens for a weekend series at Georgia March 30-April 1 and will play its first nationally televised game March 30 when ESPNU broadcasts the series opener between the Gators and Bulldogs.
