Saturday March 24, 2012Gators Finish Competition at UCF Invitational

Orlando, Fla.

The University of Florida track and field teams finished the weekend at the UCF Invitational in Orlando, Fla. on Saturday.

Senior thrower Keely Medeiros (Blumenau-SC, Brazil) had the highest finish of the day for the Gators, placing second in the women’s shot put with a toss of 16.52m/54-2.50. Medeiros was also solid in the discus, finishing sixth with a mark of 48.87m/160-4.

“Keely had a good outing in both shot put and discus,” Florida head coach Mike Holloway said. “This was one of her top-five throws all-time and I think she’s setting herself up well for a strong outdoor season.”

The women’s discus was big for the Gator women on Saturday, as junior Ashley Miller (Miami Beach, Fla.) came in fourth in the event with a throw of 50.89m/166-11 and junior Kaitlin Davis (Niceville, Fla.) finished eighth with a toss of 47.45m/155-8 to go along with Medeiros’ sixth-place finish.

Sophomore multi-event athlete Brittany Harrell (McComb, Miss.) competed in both the high jump and the 100-meter hurdles on Saturday in preparation for the women’s heptathlon at next weekend’s Texas Relays. Harrell was strong in both events, finishing sixth in the high jump by clearing 1.68m/5-6 and 13th in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.42.

“Brittany had a great indoor season and it’s carrying over to outdoor,” Holloway said. “With her high jump and hurdles today and her javelin yesterday, her fitness is great and she’s ready for next weekend.”

On the men’s side, freshman distance runner Tyler Cardillo (Punta Gorda, Fla.) turned in one of his best performances of the 2012 season with a fourth-place finish in the men’s 800, running to a time of 1:50.37.

Overall, it was a good effort this weekend,” Holloway said. “We had solid efforts across the board. We’re looking forward to next week and the Texas Relays.”
