Monday March 19, 2012No. 10 Men's Tennis Loses at No. 1 USC, 6-1

Los Angeles, CA

Matching up against a top 10 opponent for the third time in the last four matches, the 10th-ranked Florida men’s tennis team lost at top-ranked Southern Cal, 6-1, in Los Angeles on Monday night. Spencer Newman (Miami, Fla.) picked up a win at No. 4 singles for UF.

Florida (9-6, 2-2 Southeastern Conference) had a tall task in traveling across the country, as defending national champion USC (18-0, 0-0 Pac-12) entered the contest with a 37-match win streak. The Gators got off to a sluggish start, as the Trojans’ Steve Johnson and Roberto Quiroz quickly dispatched of UF’s duo of Billy Federhofer (North Miami, Fla.) and Nassim Slilam (Paris, France), 8-1, at No. 1 doubles.

USC clinched the doubles point with an 8-3 win on court 3, where Emilio Gomez and Yannick Hanfmann defeated Andrew Butz (Vero Beach, Fla.) and Bob van Overbeek (Boca Raton, Fla.). Daniel Nguyen and Ray Sarmiento completed the doubles sweep, a first for Florida this season, with an 8-2 win over Tripper Carleton (Naples, Fla.) and Newman.

In singles action, the Trojans jumped out to a 4-0 lead to secure the team victory. Johnson, the defending NCAA singles champion, took down van Overbeek, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 1 singles for his 51st win in a row. On court six, Quiroz defeated Federhofer, 6-2, 6-3, for a 3-0 team lead. Hanfmann clinched the match with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Florent Diep (Paris, France) at No. 5 singles.

Newman defeated 41st-ranked Gomez, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 4 singles for the lone UF point. Carleton and Slilam each dropped three-set results after the match was decided.

Florida continues SEC play this weekend, hosting No. 12 Mississippi State on Friday at 5 p.m. The Gators will travel to Oxford, Miss., for a match against Ole Miss on Sunday at 2 p.m.
