Monday March 19, 2012UF Softball's Lauren Haeger Repeats as SEC Freshman of the Week
For the second-consecutive week and third time this season, Florida softball’s Lauren Haeger (Peoria, Ariz.) has been tabbed the Southeastern Conference’s Freshman of the Week. The honor for Haeger comes following UF’s weekend sweep over South Carolina, the Gators’ eighth-straight over the Gamecocks, also marking Florida’s third conference series win this season.
Haeger once again led the Orange and Blue through the weekend set at home against South Carolina as the Gators made it 26 straight victories over the Gamecocks. The freshman was 5-for-9 (.556) at the plate to lead the squad, while registering three extra-base hits with two doubles and her fifth homer of the season. She drove in a team-leading six RBI, just over a third of the team’s overall total on the weekend (17). The first year checked in with a 1.111 slugging percentage, a .600 on-base percentage and was just a triple shy of hitting through the cycle in Sunday’s series finale over USC.
Haeger owns a team-leading eight doubles this season, reached base in all three games against the Gamecocks and has now reached base in all but three Florida games this year, currently riding a 14-game reached-base streak. The Deer Valley High School product now has eight multiple RBI games for the Orange and Blue, with three each in the series opener and finale versus USC and has now batted in three or more RBI on five occasions this year.
In addition to her work at the plate on offense, Haeger also picked up the win in the circle in Saturday’s series clincher for her eighth victory of the season, tossing a combined shutout with UF sophomore ace Hannah Rogers. Haeger allowed just four hits and no runs through the first five innings for the Gators’15th shutout of the 2012 season. She rung up four Gamecocks in her one outing and has fanned four or more opponent hitters in eight of 10 appearances in the circle this year. Cumulatively, Haeger has tossed 54.2 innings for the Gators, allowed just 10 earned runs (1.28 ERA) and has 61 Ks on the year.
With Friday’s series opener against USC, UF added its 12th run-rule victory of the season with a 9-1, five-inning feat, while Saturday’s 1-0 shutout counted as the Gators’ 15th shutout of the year. Through this weekend’s 19-inning series, Florida allowed just four runs, while scoring 17.
Haeger and the Gators will enjoy a week free of mid-week competition before heading to Fayetteville for a weekend series with Arkansas March 23-25. Florida leads the all-time series, 32-10, including a 14-5 advantage in Fayetteville. The Gators have four straight sweeps, having won the last 12 consecutive meetings with the Razorbacks.
