Saturday March 17, 2012McCumber Paces Gators on Day Two of Schenkel Invitational

Statesboro, Ga.

The University of Florida men’s golf team saw four golfers shoot rounds of even par or better to post a second round 285 (-3) at the Schenkel Invitational at Forest Heights Country Club. For the tournament, the Gators sit in a tie for fourth after the second day.

“It was a pretty disappointing day for us,” said head coach Buddy Alexander. “The course was ideal for scoring and we just didn’t have it today. We’re still in a position where we can move up the leaderboard with a good round tomorrow but it’s unfortunate that we couldn’t take advantage of the course today.”

For the day, the Gators were led by junior Tyler McCumber (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) who carded a two-under 70. McCumber got off to a fast start making a birdie on the first and an eagle on the second. After a pair of bogeys on three and eight, McCumber tallied a birdie on nine to go out in 34 (-2). On the back nine, McCumber used a birdie against a bogey to come in with an even par 36. For the tournament, McCumber sits in a tie for 19th at three-under.

Junior T.J. Vogel (Cooper City, Fla.) also finished in the red for the Orange and Blue firing a 71 (-1). Vogel used five birdies countered by four bogeys for his 14th round at or under par on the season.

Freshmen J.D. Tomlinson (Gainesville, Fla.) and Eric Banks (Truro, Canada) posted even-par rounds of 72 on their second days of action, each using a trio of birdies counted by a trio of bogeys. After two rounds, Tomlinson sits in a tie for 19th at three-under, while Banks is tied for 25th at one-under.

Senior Zach Lee (Ponte Verda, Fla.) rounded out the UF lineup finishing with a 76 (+4) to sit at five-over for the tournament.

Competing as an individual, senior Michael Furci (Sayville, N.Y.) shot a one-over 73 with three birdies, a bogey and a triple. Furci now sits in a tie for 25th at one-under for the tournament.

The Gators return to the course tomorrow at 8:45 a.m. Live stats for the round will be available through golfstat.com.
