Gainesville, Fla.
University of Florida All-American Lauren Embree (Marco Island, Fla.) was named the Southeastern Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week, the league announced Wednesday.
The
Gator junior won all three singles matches last week, capped by a thrilling
comeback against Georgia’s Lauren Herring, as Embree rallied from down a set to
force a third, then came back from down 2-1 in the deciding frame in the last
match on court and the team score locked at 3-all, to win the three-setter and
help the No. 15-ranked Gators upset No. 4 Georgia in Athens.
Embree
also was involved in the clinching doubles-point match, as she and her partner Joanna
Mather (Duluth, Ga.) produced the winning decision after the first two
matches had split. The doubles win was Embree’s 75th career doubles victory.
Embree’s straight-set singles victory against Tennessee’s No. 37 Kata Szekely was the 50th dual match singles win of her career, as she helped the Gators earn a 7-0 victory in their SEC opener.
The
Gators began the week earning their 14th straight win against Florida State, as
Embree played the No. 1 singles position and helped Florida earn the 7-0 team
sweep against its in-state rival.
Embree
finished the week with a 51-5 all-time dual match singles record, including
21-0 in SEC dual match competition. She sports a career singles record of 74-12
and a doubles mark of 75-14.
Florida jumped to No. 2 in this week’s national ITA Team Rankings thanks to a successful showing last week and return to the court on Friday, when the Gators play host to No. 22 Vanderbilt at 5 p.m. at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex. Admission to the match is FREE and the first 100 fans will receive a Florida Tennis bucket hat.
