Tuesday March 6, 2012Three Gators Earn Men's Basketball All-SEC Honors, Young Named Scholar-Athlete of the Year

Gainesville, Fla.

Florida was well-represented among the Southeastern Conference’s annual coaches’ awards and all-conference teams announced Tuesday by the league office.

Sophomore center Patric Young (Jacksonville, Fla.) earned SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors, while junior guard Kenny Boynton (Pompano Beach, Fla.) and freshman guard Bradley Beal (St. Louis, Mo.) were named first-team All-SEC and senior guard Erving Walker (Brooklyn, N.Y.) received second-team All-SEC recognition. Beal was also named to the SEC All-Freshman team. That group joins sophomore forward Will Yeguete (Bourdeaux, France), who was named to the SEC Community Service Team on Monday.

Boynton and Beal are the first Florida teammates to receive first-team honors in the same season since Al Horford, Corey Brewer and Joakim Noah all did in 2007. Udonis Haslem and Brett Nelson also accomplished the feat in 2001, as did Dan Cross and Andrew DeClerq in 1995. Beal is the first player in Florida history to be named first-team All-SEC and SEC All-Freshman in the same season.

Walker earned second-team accolades for the third straight year, becoming the first Gator since Haslem to be named all-conference in at least three consecutive seasons.

Young is the third Gator to earn SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors, joining two-time winner Lee Humphrey (2006 and 2007) and Ray Shipman (2010). He holds a 3.37 GPA in telecommunications.

The Gators open SEC Tournament action in New Orleans on Friday at 3:30 p.m. Eastern against the winner of the opening-round matchup between Alabama and South Carolina.
