Sunday February 26, 2012Gators Swim Several NCAA Provisional Marks at Last Chance Meet

Athens, Ga.

Led by juniors Cameron Martin (Clearwater, Fla.,) and Sarra Lajnef (Tunis, Tunisia) as well as freshman Rebecca Rainer (Richmond, Va.), who each recorded three NCAA provisional times, the University of Florida swimming and diving team swam numerous other ‘B’ cuts this past weekend at the University of Georgia Last Chance Meet in Athens, Ga., at the Gabrielsen Natatorium.


Martin recorded provisional marks in both fly events, finishing the 100 in 49.64 and 200 in 1:43.54. The Clearwater native also added a ‘B’ cut in the 200 back when he touched the wall in 1:45.30. Fellow junior, Lajnef, recorded ‘B’ times in both the 200 breast (2:12.68) and back (2:!2.54) as well as the 400 IM when she clocked in at 4:14.76.


Rainer touched in NCAA ‘B’ times in three different events – the 200 breast (2:14.55), 200 fly (1:59.09) and 200 IM (2:00.50). It was the fastest time of Rainer’s career in the 200 fly, hitting the sub-two-minute marker for the first time, as well as her best effort in the 200 IM.


For the men, a trio of freshmen in Matt Elliott (Peoria, Ill.), Carlos Omana (Miami, Fla.) and Billy Silva (Gainesville, Fla.) recorded two provisional marks apiece.


Elliott finished both breast races in NCAA ‘B’ times after he stopped the clock at 54.57 in the 100 and 1:54.63 (personal best) in the 200. Omana followed Elliott’s lead when he touched in NCAA ‘B’ cuts in the 200 IM (1:48.60) and 400 IM (3:48.44) – both personal best efforts. Silva collected a pair of provisional times when he finished a duo of races – the 1,650 free in 15:21.41 and the 400 IM in 3:52.33 – both in career low marks.


Junior Jason Taylor (Plant City, Fla.) reached a provisional mark in the 500 free when he touched the wall in 4:18.83, a personal-best effort.


He was joined by three freshmen in Scott Heil (Skillman, N.J.), Austin Ringquist (Hillsboro, Ore.) and Matthew Thompson (Seminole, Fla.) who also recorded NCAA ‘B’ cuts. Heil finished the 200 free in 1:37.14 (personal-best); Ringuist stopped the clock at 1:46.19 (personal best) in the 200 back, while Thompson also recorded a provisional mark in the 200 back after he touched in 1:46.38 (personal best) to round out the NCAA provisional swimmers for the men’s squad.


For the women’s squad, a pair of sophomores in Kaitlin Frehling (St. Petersburg, Fla.) and Julia Treible (Roswell, Ga.) each recorded two NCAA ‘B’ cuts while in Athens. Frehling finished the 50 free in 22.92 and the 100 free in a personal-best 49.61, while Trebile clocked in at 2:14.65 in the 200 breast and 4:19.52 in the 400 IM to log provisional times.


Five other members of the women’s squad swam NCAA ‘B’ times over the weekend to better their times heading into the NCAA tournament. Seniors Angelina Ballatore (Gainesville, Fla.), Anna-Liisa Pold (San Diego, Calif.) and Kirsten Smith (Cary, N.C.) touched in ‘B’ times when Ballatore finished the 400 IM in 4:14.71, Pold, the 200 fly in 2:00.49 and Smith the 400 IM in 4:12.93.


Junior Corinne Showalter (Sarasota, Fla.), sophomore Trish Regan (Carmel, Ind.) and sophomore Molly Dubrasky (Estero, Fla.) completed the group of Gator swimmers to reach provisional times. Showalter clocked in at 4:46.05 in the 500 free, Regan touched in 1:57.84 to make the cut in the 200 back, while Dubrasky finished the 200 fly in 1:54.46. – a personal-best effort.

Next up for the Gators is the NCAA Championship meet for both the men and women, in addition to the Diving Zone Championships. The women will compete in Auburn, Ala. March 15-17, while the men will take to the pool in Seattle, Wash. March 22-24. The divers will also travel to Auburn March 5-7 for their respective Zone Championship meet.
