Monday February 20, 2012Softball's Brittany Schutte and Lauren Haeger Pick up SEC Weekly Honors
UF Softball’s Brittany Schutte (Fountain Valley, Calif.) and Lauren Haeger (Peoria, Ariz.) picked up Florida’s second and third SEC Athlete of the Week honors this season, as Schutte was named the SEC Player of the Week, while Haeger picked up her inaugural SEC Freshman of the Week honor.
The accolades for the duo come after a four-game home stand for the Orange and Blue, including wins over Jacksonville Feb. 15 and a series sweep over Michigan State Feb. 17-19. Florida improved to 9-0 on the season and earned the program’s 700th victory with its 11-1 win over the Spartans on Feb. 18. The Gators set season-highs for hits (14 on 2/17), walks drawn (11 on 2/19), runs scored (15 on 2/19) and runs per inning (seven in the third on 2/19) over the weekend. Florida has now scored 79 runs to opponents’ nine, with 74 RBI, 88 hits, 12 doubles, four triples and 11 homers, good for a .407 team batting clip. UF additionally has seven run-rule victories this season, six being five-inning wins, and five shutouts on the year.
Schutte strung together nine-consecutive hits for the Gators this past week after grounding out in her first at-bat against Jacksonville, but connecting in all of her at-bats since to lead the Gators through the past week of play with a .900 batting clip. The junior now leads the Gators this season with a .560 batting average and is currently on a five-game hit streak, having reached base in five-consecutive games through the weekend. Schutte leads UF in doubles, total bases, walks, on-base percentage, slugging percentage and ranks second in hits, runs and RBI. She contributed nine of UF’s 44 runs this weekend, while the Gators limited their two opponents to just seven through four games, and hit a team-tying high two homers – her first two of the season – for a 1.600 slugging percentage in the last week of play.
As for Haeger, not only did the freshman lead the Gators this past weekend at the plate, but in the circle as well, picking up two of UF’s four wins last week to bring her to an undefeated 3-0. Haeger drove in a team-leading seven RBI from Wednesday to Sunday, with a team-tying two home runs. She now leads the UF squad with 15 RBI on the season and three long balls. Haeger accounted for four of UF’s eight runs in the Friday contest with the Spartans after being perfect at the plate with a RBI single, a sac fly and a two-run homer. In addition to her contributions against Jacksonville Wednesday and MSU Sunday at the plate, she also picked up her second and third victories in the circle, with 12 strikeouts in the two outings, including seven versus Jacksonville and five against Michigan State. Haeger allowed just four earned runs in the two decisions in 11.0 innings of work. The first-year Gator has reached base in all nine of Florida’s games so far in 2012 and leads the team in multiple RBI games, with four.
Next up, the Gators will head to the Cathedral City Classic in Palm Springs, Calif., and will face Texas A&M, Washington, BYU, Texas and Boise State during its three-day stay in the desert. The California trip will provide the Gators their first match-ups against Top-25 competition as an early-season test before UF returns home to host its own tournament, the Lipton Invitational March 2-4.
