Wednesday February 15, 2012Bob van Overbeek Named SEC Men's Tennis Player of the Week

Gainesville, Fla.

Junior Bob van Overbeek has been named the Southeastern Conference Menís Tennis Player of the Week, announced Wednesday by the league office. He won four matches last weekend, two each in doubles and singles, and claimed his first career victory over a top-five ranked singles opponent.

A native of Boca Raton, Fla., van Overbeek helped the Gators defeat No. 32 Florida State on Saturday, 6-1, and No. 18 Illinois on Sunday, also 6-1. He has played in the top singles spot in the lineup in all but one match this season and has teamed with Andrew Butz at No. 3 doubles for all six matches. Van Overbeek currently ranks No. 69 in singles and is ranked 25th in doubles with Butz.

On Saturday, van Overbeek and Butz teamed to win the first doubles match, 8-5, against FSUís Andres Bucaro and Benjamin Lock, helping Florida take the doubles point. He then earned a straight-set win at No. 1 singles over the Seminoleís Jordan Kelly-Houston, 6-3, 7-6 (6), to give Florida a 3-0 lead in the match.

After the Gators split the doubles matches on the top two courts against Illinois on Sunday, Butz and van Overbeekís match against Bruno Abdelnour and Stephen Hoh became crucial. The UF duo had fallen behind 4-2 to the Fighting Illini, but reeled off six-straight games to win the match and take the doubles point for Florida.

Going up against No. 2-ranked Dennis Nevolo in singles, van Overbeek pulled out a tiebreaker in the first set to gain the advantage, but fell behind 3-1 early in the second set. He then broke Nevolo twice and held serve twice to take a 5-3 lead and things looked promising. Nevolo won his final service game, but van Overbeek followed with a big service game of his own to end the match, 7-6 (5), 6-4, earning his first-ever victory over a top-5 opponent.

The Florida menís tennis team returns to action this Friday at the ITA National Indoors in Charlottesville, Va., facing No. 12 Pepperdine in the Round of 16.
