Monday February 13, 2012Cameron Martin Named To 2012 SEC Swimming And Diving Community Service Team
University of Florida junior swimmer Cameron Martin (Clearwater, Fla.) has been named to the 2012 Southeastern Conference Swimming and Diving Community Service Team, the league announced Tuesday evening. The SEC sponsors Community Service Teams for all 20 league sponsored sports. The Community Service Team looks to highlight an athlete from each school who gives back to his or her community in superior service efforts.
Martin was selected as a member of the 2012 service team after contributing to the University of Florida and Gainesville communities through both the Gator swimming and diving team and University Athletic Association community service initiatives.
“It’s always a positive thing when you see student-athletes doing great things and getting involved in the community,” head coach Gregg Troy said. “This is a tremendous example of an exceptional student-athlete making great decisions and doing positive things in his life – not only for himself, but for others too.”
The nod comes as no surprise to the people who know Martin, as he continuously involves himself in community service initiatives. The Clearwater, Fla., native makes weekly visits to Shands Hospital to volunteer and visit sick patients. Additionally, he partakes in the Goodwill Gators program as a math tutor, and works with under privileged children in the local community in anyway possible – assisting with food drives; helping with Gator Tracks - UAA initiative where UF student-athletes help distribute shoes to local elementary schools; and Climb for Cancer, where Gators work with children who are either battling or who have survived Cancer.
The CAMP Gator Mentor can also be found at P.K. Young Middle School throughout the week, where he has been mentoring sixth through eighth grade students for the past three semesters.
As a captain of the men’s swimming and diving team and treasurer of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee at UF, Martin has exceeded expectations both in and out of the pool. A 2011 Capital One Academic All-District At-Large Second Team selection and CSCAA Division I Scholar All-America award winner, his efforts are noticed both athletically, and academically.
A one-time All-American, Martin has led the Gators to an undefeated record for just the 17th time in program history, and looks to lead his team to their first SEC Championship title in 18 years as they travel to Knoxville this week for the 2012 Southeastern Conference Championships.
