First-year Gator Sami Fagan (Dunnellon, Fla.) picked up the first Southeastern Conference weekly accolade for No. 2/4 Florida this season, earning SEC Freshman of the Week honors after an impressive debut last weekend at the Gators’ season-opening USF-Fairfield Inn & Suites Tampa North Tournament, hosted by South Florida.

Fagan started in all five games for the Orange and Blue at the hot corner, helping UF get off to a 5-0 start on the road with wins over Long Island, Maine, Illinois State, USF and FGCU. Fagan recorded 10 hits in all over the weekend, including a double and a triple, to lead the Gators’ squad with a .667 batting clip. The 2011 Gatorade Florida Softball Player of the Year was productive on the base paths as well, swiping two, one against Long Island and another against FGCU.

Fagan had two or more hits in four of UF’s five games, and reached base in all five after drawing a walk against USF to lead the Gators in on-base percentage (.722) through five contests. She hit a perfect 3-for-3 against both Maine and Illinois State and was 2-for-3 against Long Island and FGCU. Fagan also contributed a team-high seven assists on the weekend.

A Dunnellon High School product, Fagan stepped right into her role at Florida, assuming the two-hole position at the top of UF’s batting lineup for the first five games.

On the weekend, the Gators racked up three five-inning run-rule victories, four shutouts, earned their first extra-innings win, scored 35 runs to opponents’ two and smacked seven doubles, two triples and five homers to assist with 33 RBI.

Florida will take the momentum from its five victories in Tampa and look to bring it back to Gainesville as the team hosts Sunshine State opponent Jacksonville Wed., Feb. 15, for a mid-week match-up to open the home portion of the 2012 schedule. First pitch between the Dolphins and Gators is slated for 5 p.m. from Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium.
