Friday February 10, 2012Men's Tennis Hosts No. 32 Florida State and No. 18 Illinois This Weekend
The Florida menís tennis team will host two matches this weekend at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex. On Saturday at 1 p.m. the Gators will take on in-state rival Florida State, and on Sunday at noon UF will play No. 18 Illinois.
Florida enters the weekend with a 3-1 record, with their first loss of the season coming last weekend at No. 2 Virginia. The Seminoles are 8-1 this season after starting with seven-straight wins to open dual play. The only common opponent between the two teams is No. 8 Baylor. UF won 6-1 on the road against the Bears, while FSU lost 4-3 in Waco.
Since head coach Andy Jackson took over the menís tennis program at UF prior to the 2002 season the Gators and Seminoles have played 11 times, with Florida winning 10 matches, including three wins in postseason action. UFís lone loss against FSU under Jackson was a 4-3 decision in Tallahassee in 2007. Florida has not lost to Florida State at home since 1997 and holds a 52-20 overall record against the Seminoles.
The Florida-Florida State tennis match is part of the Fresh from Florida Sunshine Showdown Series. Presented by Fresh from Florida, its goal is to remind all fans of the importance of buying home grown and harvested products from Florida. It supports our stateís farmers and fisherman, and our local economies.
On Sunday, the Gators will welcome the Fighting Illini to Gainesville. Illinois is 5-2 on the season with two wins over top 25 opponents. Their losses came at No. 10 Duke, 7-0, and against No. 17 North Carolina, 4-2. UF trails in the overall series, 6-10, but has split the last four meetings, with each team winning twice on their home courts. Last year, the Illini won 4-3 in Urbana.
All regular season home tennis matches are free and open to the public. Live scoring will be available online via GatorZone.com.
